User is registering an account (Action showed in Who's Online)?

Hi Forum,
yesterday, the "Who's Online" section in my forum displayed, that a (new registered) user is "registering an  account in the forum". And the red icon with the exclamation mark sayed, that the user's session timed out.

This confused me a little bit, so I banned the user.

Was this a hacking attempt? Or what else can cause this?

It's not a hacking attempt.

Who's Online shows what the user *attempted* to do, not necessarily if it was successful. Timeout during registration can happen if they leave the browser window open and go somewhere else and come back and refresh the page or somesuch.
