Let me ask you this: why do you want to remove the SMF copyright statement?

In my experience, the most common reason why an admin would want to do this is that the admin wants to assert their own copyright over the content of their website.

Most admins who feel this way will end up using something like this:

Powered by SMF 2.1.4 ©️ 2023, Simple Machines

Prepending the phrase "Powered by" is completely acceptable from the perspective of the SMF support team, and it seems to satisfy most admins as well.

Some admins will go further and use a statement like this:

All content ©️ 2024, <company name>
Powered by SMF 2.1.4 ©️ 2023, Simple Machines

That is also fine as far as the SMF support team is concerned, but it is a very bad idea for most forums. In virtually every country in the world, the author of each post owns the copyright for that post's content; the administrator and/or owner of the forum emphatically does not own the copyright to the content of those posts. Therefore, trying to claim copyright for that content is just asking to be sued.
