SMF Version: SMF 1.1.1
Hi,

Some members says that my forum is slow, and others not. For me, there's no problem. I tested with a timekooper and it's about 1 second in average for the page to finish load, the "Page created in..." shows about 0.250 seconds.
My server settings are the follow:
*persistent connection - yes
*local storage of cookies - yes
*cookies available across subdomains - no
*fix broken tables - yes
*compress output - no
*database for session storage - yes
*return to cached pages - yes
I have no cache accelerator but use "Cache level 1".

Please help me solve this.
Cordially,
Johan

what happens if persistent connections are off?

Okey, I will try to turn off persistent connections and ask my members later in the day if it's better.

joh87swe

I've tested to turn persistent connections off today but it doesn't seem it is due to that. Any other ideas? Maby it's because some users don't have cache activated in their browser, hmn... I don't know.

Ask people reporting slow forum to include some additional info: browser, firewall, page generation time displayed, etc.

I talked to some members who had the problem that the forum is slow. For some of them it takes 30 seconds to 1 minut to load a page!!!
This is crazy, please really need help.

c2h5oh

ok, but what generation time do they get?

I don't have the "Page created in..." for my theme.

That's when I switch to the default theme. My members can only use the costum theme.

Then I'd suggest changing back to default for a day, so that we can get to the bottom of this. The only way for us to help you, is if you help yourself ;)

I have been having similar problems for least a few weeks, but I am still using RC2.
I also have been having lots of connection problem errors sent to me, maybe dozens in a day.
I do have the page time turned on and I personally have seen <1 sec to more than a minute.
I suspected the shared server has someone else hogging the database and complained to tech support.
So far they find nothing wrong.

So I repaired settings.php for no effect
I changed a few settings that were recommended for no effect
I just turned on persistent connection to see if that helped, so far it is possible that it did.

edit: quick stats, 2 users online times of 8/16/8/3.5 seconds for a few pages, faster than earlier
But this is a relatively small forum, 3328 users, 6471 posts
Searching about says problem is godaddy oversell of servers

I run a forum on a Yahoo server and you wouldn't believe the problems we have had. Yahoo say it's fine their end but I have my doubts, first we thought it just UK users but a few others have reported the forum slowing down. I personally have loads of problems, getting reports of errors in the database as it couldn't connect is a regular occurence, but database seems fine. When you post a message you have to cross your fingers if it will go through, connecting to the forum or refreshing the page can take an age, I'm talking over a few minutes sometimes and then it might not connect altogether. E-mail notification has never worked, can't install any mods and we have only got just over 200 members!! I'm sure people are put off by joining our forum when it is in slow mode and I bet they are put off smf whether it is the servers fault or not, I would be and I like  smf. Sometimes it runs ok which is a mystery although installing any mods or Email notification is a big no-no. Perhaps you can recommend some servers?

joh87swe

Hi,

My forum is now on a DS and everything works great. Much more controle, you can install more interesting mods like eAccelerator which I like much. Better server better forum life!
I can't recommand any server, I bought one in the country where I live and also because traffic to my forum only come from this country.

Regards,
Johan
