Avatars no longer working on ssi_boardNews

Here's the situation. I had used the technique written here when I was running 1.0.x, and it worked perfectly. However, upon upgrading to 1.1RC3, it only displays avatars that are remotely linked - avatars that were uploaded do not show. How can I fix this?

I'm using the same SSI.php I was using while running 1.0.8, if it matters. (And I have a feeling this is indeed the problem, but I want to know for sure before I go and break something)
