Question about using smf for homepage

Recently I have seen a few people use the SMF interface as a homepage, with the smf menu up top, and below, smf-style boxes with introductory text. How do I do this sort of thing? I heard it was related to SSI.php, but whenever I try to access the page it gives me an error message. Any ideas?

Note, I have the joomla bridge installed so this might be causing issues.

So the question is, how to use SMF features and style outside the actual forum.
