regarding enabling html.

If its simple html then its fine, but it you enabled them to use ALL html and embed objects like flash and or javascript, then your asing for trouble.

SMF does not do automatic backups,  you are meant to backup your database yourself.  You can either backup your database via phpmyadmin or via smf > admin > maintenance.

how do i disable that members can not embed objects like flash and javascript. I want to make sure i have done everything that i can to prevent my site from being hacked

Admin Panel -> Posts and Topics

Post Settings has the option 'Embed flash into posts', make sure it is unchecked
