attempted convert from phpBB2 to smf problem

Maybe I screwed up, but when I installed smf, I created a new db. So now when I try to convert is gives me this error:

The error MySQL gave was: Access denied for user 'xxxxxxx'x'x' to database 'xxxxx'

I "x'd" out the names for security, but this should give you the idea.

I thought maybe I needed to give the smf access to the phpBB2 db, so I tried adding the smf user to the phpBB2 db and it won't let me.

I have smf up and running, is it real nice, I had not used my phpBB2 very much so I won't lose that much starting over. However I am trying out the converter because a friend of mine is interested in smf, but he has a large board with many users, and they really don't want to start over.

So is there a manual way or a work around? Or do I need to dump and reload smf, and use the same db as phpBb2?
