This might be just normal behaviour, since I'm not sure how the system is supposed to work... But.

If someone quotes a post and accidently removes the closing tag like shown below,

[quote author=Original Author link=topic=22557.msg814774#msg814774 date=1205528552]
The original post here

Reply 1

then the software shows the quote correctly like the reply would be inside the quote,
but does not add the closing tag. SO when someone quotes this instead of:

Quote from: FIRST REPLY AUTHOR on March 21, 2008, 11:04:03 AM
Quote from: Original author on March 14, 2008, 05:02:32 PM
Original post here

Second reply here

We get this:

Quote from: FIRST REPLY AUTHOR on March 21, 2008, 11:04:03 AM
Quote from: Original author on March 14, 2008, 05:02:32 PM

That is the expected behavior but I do wonder if we can't check for missing closing tags when doing a quote.  What is happening is that it the first quote missed the closing tag so when you quote it is still one short and adds it at the end of your topic when it parses.

Ok, but it would be nice (since it "corrects" it when showing the post) if there were a way to make SMF correct it automatically. :)

If somebody accidently removes the ending [/quote] tag then SMF has no idea where the BBC for that tag ends. So it just guesses and adds it in.
