Is it possible to limit via IP address? Google bot has a lot of different IP addresses. A lurker can always use different browsers or clear cookies to overcome the limitation. IP address will have more deterrence.

I found a bug. Guest are not allowed to do a search in my forum. The "Search" word is not display in the navigation menu, but the link is there. Check it out at http://modcarclub.com/forums/index.php?action=search2. The link is highlighted in orange color next to the "Register" menu. Check out attachment. I have highlighted it in red circle.

When a guest click on it, it will create the following error message.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://modcarclub.com/forums/index.php?action=search2
8: Undefined index: title
File: ................/forums/Themes/default/index.template.php
Line: 432

http://modcarclub.com/forums/index.php?action=search2
8: Undefined index: href
File: ................/forums/Themes/default/index.template.php
Line: 431

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Line 431 and 432 in my index.template.php is as follows:
431:                  <a class="', $button['active_button'] ? 'active ' : '', 'firstlevel" href="', $button['href'], '"', isset($button['target']) ? ' target="' . $button['target'] . '"' : '', '>
432:                     <span class="', isset($button['is_last']) ? 'last ' : '', 'firstlevel">', $button['title'], '</span>

Perhaps because you're limiting the amount of views and by the time the guest gets to a thread with an image, it says please register.

I wouldn't use this mod for a website like yours.

I agree, I wouldn't even use this mod in the first place, because not only does it limit guests - it is going to affect search engines too.

I've given GoogleBot Direct Access

And that's even more likely to get you penalised. Google has been known to take action against sites who hide content from guests but show it to Google.

Google themselves allow you to give direct access to it's crawler... You have to give it a user name and password..

And it still has been known to penalise sites if the content is substantially difference as a certain tech Q&A site discovered a bit back, username or no username. Also, I'm not sure it's actually able to log in the way you think it is (last I checked it was trying to use URLs in the form of http://username:[email protected]/ but that won't work in SMF)

In my Google Access Panel .. it shows the Status as Crawling with no errors..
Many Sites have to do this .. not all sites allow full access. you have to log in.

Facebook is a good example...

With this mod.. the guest have Full access just like regular members,.. they are just limited to a set amount of views..

Arantor

It won't give you any errors when crawling. The way this all works out, there won't be any errors shown to Google - but it also won't log in as Google.

I don't think you'll find Facebook works the same way.

And in any case, limiting views like this will affect Google, whether or not you've given Google an account (because it can't use it)

Google Adsense crawlers - sure - but other crawlers don't work well with this mod. You're restricting new users or potentially new users by leaving it on. My two cents.

With the Mod on ... 20+ Registrations per day..
Mod Off .. 9+

I'll Remove it soon enough..
