Prevent from using [] in Names ?

Hi y'all,
some users in my board (SMF1.0, so far) like to use square brackets in their user- or at least screen names, some for "depicting the pronounciation" of cryptic Names, some (i think) only for being sooooooo special.
Since the usage of square brackets spoils the link in the "quote"-tag, i would like to forbid square brackets in user- or screen- names. But i can't use the "forbidden"-list for that, can i ? (Would prevent from using tags at all, I presume ?)

Regards,
GeeKay

It spoils the link in a quote?  Really?  Quote me.

see it works fine. ;)

Hmm, it seems, my analysis was not complete.
That particular Member that caused my request uses [_____ www.hisdomain.de [nofollow] _____] as his screen name.
And that spoils the "quote"-formatting.
This is, what one of these quotes looks like (copied & pasted from preview):
link=topic=1640.msg21898#msg21898 date=1103449082]
and then the unformatted, quoted text
but the
-Tag is suppressed correctly.

If i deleted the square brackets, the quote worked correctly, so i was convinced, the brackets do the spoiling ...

But in fact, if i delete or add any one leading or trailing special character, the quote will be displayed correctly.

OK, revised, what can i do to prevent users from entering a screen name like that ?

Hmm, I think the problem is simply length.  The quote functionality doesn't like names that are too long.

I suppose URLs shouldn't be allowed in names like that... hmm... I wonder if it would be possible to fix that... hmmm...

Should names *that long* even be allowed?  Maybe a max characters limit for names is in order.

you could always add www. and http:// and .com, .net, ect and have it  Check username, and Check display name, make it case insensitive and don't match whole name. ;)

Can we fix it so that it doesn't matter how long the "author" is? Otherwise it looks weird when you try to add a link to the author and the URL is really long, like in this example:

Quote from: "url=http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php]SMF Community Forums"]Powered By SMF 1.l33t

Quoting SHOULD admit GLOBAL link.

Because of 6 byte coding of Russian letters in Unicode
the effective length of ~Russian Author Name~
is no longer than 11 symbols.
