Limit the amount of groups an user can be in?

Hi, hope someone can help me here. I have several groups outside of the "post based" groups that users can join and leave freely. However I was wondering is there anyway to limit the amount of these "free" groups that user can be apart of at the same time.

For example: I have 15 groups, but I only want any user to be apart of 3 max at any given time.

There is no set limit that I can find in SMF to restrict them from registering to all those free membergroups. If you want, we can move this over to the Mod Request board for you.
