Welcome to SMF :)

You must of
a) Install a mod recently that caused this
b) Edited your templates ../Themes/default/index.template.php resulting in this error

You can try replacing that file freshly from a new install or undoing the mod that could of caused this.

Did you install or did you install via a script in your hosting. If you installed through your hosting it should be 1.x. You can down load a copy of the index.template.php to your machine with ftp and the second line in that file will give you the template version.

How long has your forum been operating?
PM at your own risk, some I answer, if they are interesting, some I ignore.

You should give that a go. We mean overwrite a fresh index.template.php replacing your old corrupt index.template.php file. (../Themes/default/index.template.php) You would do this by installing the latest SMF and extracting the file & replacing it via FTP.

Alternately if you look in ../Themes/default you may notice a index.template~.php file. If so you can delete your current index.template.php and rename index.template~.php to index.template.php.

You should not have done that. There is a reason the default is the actual default 'core'. It has many templates that other themes do not have that must be present for your forum to operate.

From reading one of your earlier post I think this may have been caused by a mod.

Which version of SMF are you using? It is very important that we know this.

Do you have other mods installed in the forum at this moment?

I would suggest changing the default core back to the actual default by name.

If all else fails then you can do a file refresh:

Note: You will lose all mods by doing this but you will not lose the data associated with those mods that is stored in the database. You should be able to install the mods again and have the data there.

1. Download a current copy of settings.php and settings_bak.php

2. Download an archive of the version you are using.

3. Unzip the archive

4. Remove the install.php, settings.php, settings_bak.php (from the archive)

5. Copy your settings.php and settings_bak.php into the folder (Top level)

6. Delete the current forum folders and files.

7. Upload the new forum files that now includes the settings files that you added to your hosting space.

8. Chmod the following files and folders:

The following files should be CHMOD'ed to 777*:

    * attachments
    * avatars
    * Packages
    * Packages/installed.list
    * Smileys
    * Themes
    * Themes/default/languages/Install.english.php
    * agreement.txt
    * Settings.php
    * Settings_bak.php

* If your host does not allow 777 permissions please try 755

Login and make sure the forum is working as it should. If all checks out then you can set the min files as writable in the adminCP

Is this issue solved or do you still require assistance?  For the most part we like to close out topics once the issue is resolved.  However when we close it out we want your forum to be working so if you are still getting errors, feel free to post them here so we can get you up and running.
