Many people don't want uninvited PMs and yet this topic is ancient.

[unknown]

Would it bug you greatly if I poked at the code a bit and then packaged it up as a MOD? I've never done a MOD for SMF and I can't see me going back to any other forum software so this seems as good a thing as any to tweak, package, and contribute.

I'd send you a PM but, well, that'd just be rather presumptuous of me.

SMF vs. Godzilla? Who do you think will win?

destalk

Judging by other threads, I think this would be a very popular mod.

KGIII

I'd love to give it a whirl. I think I'll poke at it while waiting to find out if that's acceptable to [Unknown] or not.

I've just checked [Unknown]'s profile and he doesn't appear to have posted since September 23, 2005.

[Unknown] left SMF a while ago, so he isn't likely to answer.

Well, I'm gonna poke at it and see what I come up with. I have it so that it is making mistakes. ;)

(I'm entirely new to the packaging system for MODs. I have another thread that I started as I was seeking additional help.)

I've gone through the entire tutorial but, well, I'm done for tonight with that much thinking - my brain is made of mush at this point.

I'm a newbie to SMF ..just started a forum and started to look for just this mod !!

seems 99% of spam posts are links on the first post.. this would go a long way in stopping SPAM

I'm totally with you on that.  I don't get much traffic at all on my board (It's almost a personal board for myself to post stuff that I find all over, kind of like a repository of information for myself) and I get notified on new members, so I usually just check to see if they registered, posted spam and left, in which case I just delete the post (and generally the user)

My friend runs a vB board and he has his board modified so that you can't post a link until you have something like 5 posts.  Not an end-all-be-all cure, but he says it cuts down on a ton of spam.

I have submitted it for approval. :)

(My first SMF mod that I've released - I did a few upgrades of other people's mods but those are just for my own forums.)

If you want to test it - http://kgiii.info/ignore/GarbledURLs.zip

It installs clean, uninstalls clean, and makes only a small change to the code. It is NOT approved at this time though, after reading the documentation, I'm pretty sure that it will be.

WARNINGS:

Read the readme that is enclosed and KNOW that, at this point, it is NOT approved.

I do not know if this is a link that people other than I and the administrators can reach but here's where I have uploaded it on this server:

http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=563

My MOD is ONLY for version 1.1 - again read the readme for more information. If there are a bunch of people who really want it to back-ported for older versions then I will consider it though I am certainly not a MOD writer. Most of my time was spent figuring out how to make a simple one like this work - it turns out I'm an idiot (yes, let that be a warning) and XML's CDATA takes whitespace all too literally. *sighs*

END WARNING

I don't want feedback in this thread so much as, if it is approved, there will surely be one created in the MODs section of the forum. I'm getting the hang of it and will happily poke at it more to see what I can come up with if there is a need to but, for now, it seems to work just fine.

If anyone happens to see [Unknown] please let them know that I've done this? There are some changes to his code but the idea is his, I've just taken it further to prevent them from even getting additional search engine ranking from it.

Edit: *grins* Don't forget to rank it and review it? Be honest with the ranks and reviews though - they'll help and inspire me to make it better.

Nice one! :)

Could you just expand on this a bit please? What do you mean by,
QuoteI've just taken it further to prevent them from even getting additional search engine ranking from it.

Thanks.

KGIII

A text link - even if not a URL - will still help with ranking. In other words if domain.tld is still allowed to be processed then the end result is - the way the code was - that it would still appear as domain.tld... This is not an additional inbound link BUT even better - it is textual and is containing any keywords, additional links, etc. This, quite exactly, smashes the snot out of the text they included with the exception of what they sent in the URL tags. In that case it simply makes it not a link or, if it was a link in the text portion, it mashes the snot out of that too.

:)

Basically I took [Unknown]'s idea and made it so that it wouldn't even help them regardless, no ranking, no listing, no anything. 10 posts is what I have it set at - 5 would be more rational but I set it at ten. Not only can they not post a URL but any URL posted will not work as a URL and will not look like a link or text aimed at something... No matter how they try to skew it and make the link work.

Coupled with permissions to restrict adjusting their profile it works really well.
