Yes, that also ;D :P

Grudge and [Unknown] have also been writing SMF converters for almost any forum in the galaxy, untill their hard disks ran out of space. Grudge continued writing converters on plain paper, while [Unknown] started his magnum opus on SMF's Bulletin Board Code.

Oldiesmann - remember to check CVS. I have already written a converter for punBB - but it will only work with 1.1 I'm afraid.

Have you provided the converter somewhere as I'm not finding mention of it in search...

I have 1.1 due to being a Charter member, and I posted last page about being asked to convert a forum that I'm one of the admins. I would greatly appreciate the converter, but didn't repost asking here due to waiting to see if anyone decided to do one or not...

Thanks.

Grudge

Miraenda,

I'll post what converters I have for 1.1 in the Charter board.

elven - a database dump would indeed be helpful since we can't download openBB at the moment...

Alright, were would you like me to send it?

LordStriker,

The phpNuke converter should do everything already. I wrote it with 7.7 but it should work on 7.5 and 7.6 I'd guess.

Hey Grudge,

I checked the downloads section for the converters, but cannot see one for phpNuke.

Where could I find the phpNuke converter?

  • Burning Board 2.3.x (need data)

-[Unknown]

Which Data do you need fpr this converter? i need this converter an i can give you a DB from it?![/list]

[Unknown]

If you can send me a database dump, partial or structure is fine, I can probably work it out - at least for 1.1, if not a version for 1.0 as well.

If someone could send me some data for OpenBB, I've got a partial converter going for it as well.  Please send any data to [email protected], compressed if possible.

Hi, yesterday i have send you a wbb 2.3.2 DB backup ;)

Why can't also SMF be the first to convert data into a common data format ? What I know there is no such one today, then just make one with XML which all should be able to read in case someone wanna use other forum software.

With a common data format also all import and export would be much more easy since you only have to respect one format instead of hundreds.

This is a pretty cool idea!  And since Unknown mentioned that there is no agreed upon format between forums, why not create one from scratch, based on SMF: "SMF XML format".  :D

And we'll be able to motivate other vendors... how?

-[Unknown]

Yonkey

You'd be defining a vendor-independant data format for message boards, kind of like what Netscape & UserLand did for RSS.  The competitive advantage is that you'd be the first to define this format and all others must conform to your specification in order to be properly compliant.

[Unknown]

Is this why Sony was so successful with their DVD format?

-[Unknown]

Yonkey

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but I'd say DVD's are fairly successful.   How many VHS movies do you see these advertised days? :P  Anyway, it wasn't Sony alone that developed the DVD specification, it was the DVD Forum:

"The DVD Forum is an international organization composed primarily of hardware and software companies that use and develop the DVD format. It was initially known as the DVD Consortium when it was founded in 1995.

Ten companies initially founded the organization:

Hitachi Ltd.
Matsu******a Electric Industrial Co
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation
Pioneer Corporation
Royal Philips Electronics N.V.
Sony Corporation
Thomson
Time Warner Inc.
Toshiba Corporation
Victor Company of Japan (JVC)
Today, the DVD Forum has over 230 members."

- "DVD Forum" Computer Desktop Encyclopedia. Computer Language Company Inc., 2005. Answers.com GuruNet Corp. June 29, 2005. http://www.answers.com/topic/dvd-forum

Almost all 10 of those original companies are still doing well today, 10 years later.  :D

[Unknown]

I suppose you haven't heard of DVD-R and DVD+R...

-[Unknown]

Yonkey

I don't have a DVD drive, so nope. :P

Anyway, DVD-R was created before DVD+R.  Instead of competing, they could have just upgraded the DVD-R's first specification, just like what HTML, XML, and even SMF does with every new release. :P

Hi, I am currently using WowBB 1.65 and I would really like to use SMF instead. I just don't want to lose members or their posts, pms etc.

If you need a DB back-up to look at, just let me know. Thank you

muratak18

hmmm i need converter but i will convert smf to phpbb  :D

Chris Cromer

Well your in the wrong place. You should go to the phpbb forums to ask them for that converter. Only converters that bring people to smf would be made here.

How big is your board? How much do you *need* converting? E-Blah P9 is a perl board so the converter is much harder to write. I've just managed to get it installed and it's not impossible to write a converter for - but it will be a lot of work. If I could find time to write it I'd need you to assist with testing it as my test board wouldn't have the amount of data required for a good test.
