Help needed - php extension

Hi everyone

When browsing though my server for my forum, i noticed that the .php extention for index and ssi files were actually index.php~ and SSI.php~. I thought this was weird as they were supposed to be just php, so I changed the extention to just .php. My forum doesn't work now. Ive tried changing them back to .php~ but that doesn't work either.

Anybody got any suggestions to how i can resolve this please.
