Paid vs free mods

Holy cow! How ungrateful some are. I just cannot believe Arantor hasnt deleted his post and stuck his fingers up at these 'leechers'.

$15 for a personal install - you gotta be kidding. thats less than UK minimum hourly wage!! - and depending on the number of the other mods that will require tweeking - itll take a lot longer than an hour me thinks.

Lets face it, SMF and its mods are pretty awesome and should be supported, monetarily or otherwise.

The price range indicated by arantor is pitiful - to say the least.

So........if this mod is for you - get your name down, get your wad out and support those that make your site what it is.

You'll see it on the mod site when I've finished it, though to be honest I have little or no desire left to do so.

I feel bad for Arantor. Arantor does alot of work for free. I see post from Arantor everywere on this board. And the fact that SMF users had the ability to remove all his desire to do this mod is a shame.

I would have just made the Mod and posted it as a premium mod. I mean jeez at times its good to make a few bucks and their is nothing wrong with that,considering the mod itself would most likely be a user draw for those whom have paid for it and most likely their sites are monetized anyways..

The base script is free. tons of themes are free. tons of mods are free.

Some people have to understand that not everything is free and or cheap. And to have something that other SMF users do not  have is going to cost, However that is the draw of paying for something. Your site is a step above others because it offers something that others may not. And in return more users.

I'm not working on this any more. After two months of certain people PMing me with 'is it done yet', today I finally declared enough was enough. Someone has posted in Help Wanted for this; whoever wants to take it is welcome to do so. It's paid-for there, and likely only for the paying user.


Let me clarify a little something. I've been on this forum as an active member for 7 1/2 months, making almost 21,000 posts in that time (currently the 3rd highest 'spammer' on the forum ), as well as 30-something mods, of which I already gave a dozen away to other users. The one time I debate asking for a little something back I get some stuff here but a lot more privately, much of which I considered reporting for abuse, but in the end mostly just deleted.

Some people may be aware I left the team earlier this month and subsequently requested my account be deleted. While far from the only reasons, the hassle from this mod idea was a sizeable part of it.

I totally agree wth this. Very well said Frank.  Arantor has given so much to this community and doesn''t deserve all that hassle and sh****t from some ungrateful persons.

Very very true. I find it sad that so many people feel they are entitled to get everything for free. If it's that important, it's worth paying for in one way or another. It's one of the reasons I volunteer so much time to this project. It's worth my time to support it.

Also agreed. Sometimes people will give away things for the love of it, but the more work that goes in, the more they will need to be satisfied that they are compensated for that work. Sometimes that's in simple gestures like sending a "thanks", other times it's in currency. If it's that important to you, you should be prepared to bear some of the cost of the work that goes into it.

But i have started today. Me and my team will be creating this mod.
Have started the line of code today.

But i will release to the public but it will be at a cost.

I understand your frustration with the 'niggler(s)', but there were more of us that appreciate what you do and accepted your terms, which were also looking forward to this.
Even I was going to donate to it, simply because I enjoy your work, and enjoy looking into new things, not that I'd ever need this.
It's a simple case of the few, wrecking it for the many.
And who really suffers... ?!?   @_@

Anyways, I mention this for those that have now lucked out, and do not wish to stir anything up for speaking their mind.
Their thoughts on this are just as important, no matter how 'undesirable' they are, but obviously not as important as yours.
You are well respected by me and many others, and deservingly so, but any tantrums should be left in the playground.
As stated, I understand your frustration, but it's a 2 way street mate.
The few failed 'you' with their ridiculous actions, but you in turn have now let down those which patiently waited 3 months for this, with no complaints what-so-ever.. Sure another has taken it over, or is rewriting another..  so that makes it all better does it?  That solution(to pay somebody else) could've been reached earlier for others that were waiting for the great Arantors new mod.
I've had a few bad experiences here(elsewhere) aswell, but I can tell you one thing buddy..
I've never walked away from any of them.
Youre a good guy, I know this from what little private convos we've had, so I hope you dont take my words too close to heart, and just recognise it's a small rant. This is my little polite way to show that I'm not a 'yes man'. There's too many of them already
Your heart was taken out of the project.. understandable.

The reason I have tantrums, and let's face it, they are, is because I take things close to heart - often for the wrong reasons.

As I said to someone earlier today, I don't just churn out code. For anything other than a flea-sized piece of code, a small part of me goes in. The result is that I write things I care about, and do them in a way that makes me happy. Being hounded and receiving nasty PMs does not make me happy, so the end result was that it's simpler all round that I just step back, not take this so close to heart and let the door be open to monsterebooks.

As I said, I wish him and his team that will create this the best of luck and hope he gets a better response to it than I did.

I won't deny though that the whole experience soured me, and I'm trying to move on from this to better things. But I won't be doing any mods so big or paid for - the lesson has been learned.

No that is not true. Our team is 13 but only one person i will set to do this. We design websites, and they all know PHP. I don't even know if i will go public with the mod, might keep it for myself

PAID MODS IS BETTER THEN FREE MODS.....THERE ARE A LOT OF ADVANTAGES USING PAID MODS.
