I agree the GPL license can be a bit silly with the FSF interpretation. Seems that templates sometimes need to be GPL as well (thanks for pointing that out), where Wordpress stricly enforces this but with Joomla it is condoned.

Either way I am not a preacher from the Church of GPL and not trying to convert you :) As long as SMF can be licensed under a ->compatible<- license. BSD will work fine if that is your preference, as long as you delete the obnoxious adveretisement clause from the original BSD license (or use the latest modified version).

If SMF can be licensed under BSD all of these integration problems are instantaneously resolved and will allow for much better integrations with SMF.

SMF itself may yet be licenced under BSD, the SMF API is known to be BSD, which will definitely help.
