Inserting and Displaying php codes in a portal

I'm currently trying to add a php code into a portal so that it shows up, however when i hit save and go to the location of the block there is nothing in it but a title.

Any chance you could help me?

I'm new here to SMF as well, but have you tried using the full php tags throughout the file?  I see alot of the short tag being used.

I'm also unsure if the php block accepts the php tags at all, or if you should only being including the code only and no opening and closing tags.

When i do that it gives me this error:

Database error in block code. Please check the code.
