changed server, avitars no longer working now

I changed to a quicker server, did a fresh install of RC3 and used old SQL database. all of the members and posts are there now, but every avitar has a red x.... when i try to change profile pic i get the error 'The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.'. ive set the directory for attatchments and avitar to 777 but still no joy. have checked the paths to the server and its all ok, what havent i checked??
