Quote Notification

Liam.

I just saw this as a vB mod and I thought that some users on some forums would actually find it quite useful. I don't think SMF logs quotes, but it's worth a shot...

When someone gets quoted and the quote is posted - a user should be able to recieve a PM or Email notification with a small message, and a link to that post.

SMF 2.0 RC3. No admin options - but each user has the option to have it PM, Email, or off.

As I explained the last time this was requested, can't reliably be done.

Any idea who is responsible for this mod?

Arantor

That isn't SMF. It can't be reliably done in SMF without a LOT of work.

I quote you using the button. Email sent.

I use C&P here with the tag and no parameters. No email.

Arantor

Unless you expect that a quote tag should be compared with the contents of the last - say - dozen posts in the thread... which is unreliable.

SMFPacks Alerts Pro mod does this... and a bunch more.   Quote alerts is one of the main reasons I chose to purchase the Alerts Pro package.   Check it out at www.smfpacks.com.

Arantor

And it picks up the cases Live pointed out?

Does it notify if the post is edited? (Does it notify if the post didn't have a quote before and subsequently gets one?) There are many, many more similar sorts of scenarios too.

If  you mean "Does it send an alert of a quote is posted without attribution"... no.  How could it?

Arantor

And therein lies my statement that it is unreliable.

I almost never hit the quote button, so in the thousands of posts I made, it'd never be picked up. As for 'how', I actually suggested one possible route, what, five posts ago?

I just checked and ... yup ... if you post without a quote... then edit your post and add a quote (with attribution).  It does send a QUOTE ALERT.

:)

But no... it won't send a quote alert if you don't attribute the quote.  How could it.  It needs to know who to send the alert to (obviously).

You're one of the few then.  It's been my experience that the vast majority of people attribute their quotes on my site (by hitting the quote button)... but I do have the SELECT-A-QUOTE mod and MULTI-QUOTE mod running ... so ...

EDIT: BTW - The Vbulletin version of the mod (obviously) also requires attribution... so the alerts mod I mentioned should satisfy the OP without question... that is,  if he's willing to cough up the dough (well worth it IMHO!).

As I said, half a dozen posts ago, you could conceivably look through the last dozen posts to see if anyone wrote it...

On your site, yes. But we went away and implemented a whole bunch of functionality in Wedge specifically for all the people we have that copy/paste quotes so they can get just the bits they want. (You press quote, then anywhere inside that quote you can press shift-Enter, which ends that quote, starts a new one after the cursor so people can quote a big post but reply to it in bits, without even leaving the keyboard.)

Depends.  If you've seen the alert already it does give another alert.  If you've NOT seen the alert it yet,  it just ads a number to the alert (2 quote alerts, 3 quote alerts, 4 quote alerts, etc) to the same alert so they don't stack up.

Cumbersome at best... and not really required.  Like I said,  the vast majority of my users attribute their quotes.  VERY VERY few actually go through the time of cut/paste then adding quote tags.  Much easier to highlight and then click QUOTE (select-a-quote ROCKS).

Sounds great.  But what does this guys request have to do with Wedge... at all?

That could be used to annoy someone, if you edited a post over and over and over.

Cumbersome at best, no argument. But here we see the problem. The majority of YOUR users attribute their quotes. The majority of MY users do not.

It's also easier for *you* to highlight and press quote. It isn't for me.

QuoteSounds great.  But what does this guys request have to do with Wedge... at all?

The point was that we have a LOT of people that cut/paste. I was trying to illustrate my point with examples, just as you've been expansive about telling me how much your users love what you have.

Not sure where this discussion is going...

Someone asked about the functionality.  I pointed out where he could find said functionality.  Nothing more...

Should the OP be interested in the Alerts mod... go for it.

BTW - I have no vested interest in SMFPacks.  I just use a couple of Nibogo's mods... that's it.  The Alerts Pro mod is well worth the asking price... Same with the Aeva Media 2.1 mod... well worth the price... even with the 4 errors it generates every time the BBC button or the drop down menu is used.   Much like the Alerts mod... it's not 100% ... but it gets the job done,  right?

;)

QuoteSomeone asked about the functionality.  I pointed out where he could find said functionality.  Nothing more...

And I was inquiring about the variety of edge cases in it.

QuoteMuch like the Alerts mod... it's not 100% ... but it gets the job done,  right?

If it doesn't get the job done, something should generally be done about it unless there are good reasons why not (like the fact Aeva is unsupported and that fact was well publicised before the decision to purchase was taken)

QuoteNot sure where this discussion is going...

You were telling me about what you use and why it's so wonderful, and I was pointing out that it doesn't work for everyone.

You can see how it looks like a sales pitch, though?

If a happy customer is a sales pitch,  so be it.  I'm as guilty of raving about the Aeva Media mod (for the most part)... as well as the badges system from SMFHacks... etc. etc. etc.   I simply was pointing out an option for the OP.  You've obviously got a chip on your shoulder for some reason when it comes to this topic.

OP:  If you're interested in the Alerts mod,  check out SMFPacks.com.   The alternative,  it appears,  would be to wait until 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, whenever for Wedge... I guess?

I love your enthusiasm. It's gems like that that almost gave me a breakdown earlier this year, thanks for reminding me.
