So Id like to be able to set some users into a user group the moment they register as kind of a validation category where they can post on one board until approved by an admin.

Id also like to be able to take a member out of post based groups entirely and just have them in private groups. Is that possible?

So Id like to be able to set some users into a user group the moment they register as kind of a validation category where they can post on one board until approved by an admin.

Create a new permissions profile for that board, to get per-board permissions, then you can enable Post Moderation from Core Features and play around with permissions and groups. Note that you must remove the permission of regular members to 'post without approval' otherwise that will override other groups having 'post but require approval'.

No. A member must always have a primary membergroup (even if it's 'Regular Members') and a post count group. But you *can* have it hide post counts for those in assigned groups (but it's not per-user, it would be all users in assigned groups)
