Well the ability to see 'private' data contained in a profile is one of the by products of being able to see all the posts of a user via that link.  Now I'm not sure if a direct link to the appropriate URL even without a persons ability to view a profile (a requirement to access the link usually) which would now be in the Search area would be possible.

I don't get this.  Why would SMF need to access the profile database just to return search results on posts in the public boards by username?  Does SMF access the profile database when it displays usernames in the boards and posts?  This seems strange to me.

Is this the way PHPBB and vBulletin return searches on username?

I'm not talking about the member database, I'm talking about the section of the forum which access is controlled via that permission.  Which normally contains the details for obtaining a complete user post listing.  Now like I said I'm not sure if you can access the following URL if you don't have the permission to access profiles (as they are in the source/template area)
http://furum.url.com/index.php?action=profile;u=X;sa=showPosts
X=memberID number.

I know nothing of the functionality and inner workings of phpBB or vBulletin, so can't answer that one.

Rumbaar,
OK, I see what you mean.  Well, this goes over my head technically!  I'll just have to hope someone with more knowledge of coding than me can do this.

Well I'm I can easily test the permissions part, block access via permissions and then try to access the URL directly as a test.  I think from memory it was an issue, but can see.

Good Morning,
I'd like to add my voice to this.  I have lots of members asking me why they can't do a search by username only.

Of course, people can find a member's posts this way:
Click on "Members" from the main menu > Click on "Search for Members" > Type in the name > Click [username] from the list of results > Click "Show Posts"

But it really would make more sense to be able to use the search feature for this!

Any ideas?

Matthew

I agree 100% with this, and it has frustrated me to no end that I could not find all posts by a certain user by using the **mn search tool--advanced, no less. Search really sucks in SMF.

@ jdougher - Seeing as this topic is over 3 years old, did you take a look at the Mod Site to see if someone has added this functionality?  Also you might want to check the Feature Requests board to see if anyone has requested this feature.
