Brilliant!

Yes, what you are suggesting would work perfectly. Regarding the concern about allowing a user to "opt out", I don't think this should be an option. The intent is to design and incorporate this feature for "unique groups" where participation is mandatory. However, there are always exceptions to every rule. For example, suppose an indvidual becomes very ill for several months or travels overseas on an extended vacation then there would be the need to disable their notifications.

I am not fully up to speed on how everything functions and integrates but here's something that may provide an option for an individual to opt out.  In the section "User Profile - Notifications and Email", the last option is: For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:   "Nothing at all". Perhaps this could be an overide to disable any notifications, can you confirm if this would work?

Hi, I would just leave the existing "Receive announcements/notifications by email" in their profile options intact. :)

Sorry, as I explained in a previous post, I am only using SMF 1.x so I am not familiar with the SMF2 code.  I don't plan on upgrading until the summer as the forums I have are most heavily used during this time of year, and I don't want to risk any downtime.

If anyone wants to port the mod though, that'd be more than welcome - just let me know.

Just found this great mod and I am wondering if the mod could be easily modified to just show Boards only in the selection field.
There must be a possibility to remove that output but I don't have any idea which section from the notifygroup.php would do the trick.

Some config stuff like:
boards only = yes/no
topics only = yes/no

would be a great improvement I think.

Thanks

pftq

Hi I can do that.  So you mean that incase you do not want to edit topic notifications and only plan to use it for boards? (where the board names are usually in caps and topic names with hyphen prefixes?)

lunzet

yeah exactly...I only would like to see the boards and not individual topics in that list

adam7979

hi, currently the function is only available to administrator? mind to expand it to moderators of particular board as well ? Thanks.

pftq

The mod uses the "Allowed to Moderate" permission, so mods should be able to adjust the notify group.  Are you not able to get that to work currently?

Thanks for this great mod, pftq.

I've installed it on my simple closed forum (strata board council) and it will help us greatly.

One question - after installing I can see the Group Notify button when viewing a topic, but I don't see it when I am viewing at the board level. Am I missing something? I am using the core default templates.

Thanks,

I'm not sure why the install broke after 1.1.13, as the code looks fine.  However, you can still subscribe people to a board index by clicking reset of getting to NotifyGroup from the topic display.

I'll look into this in the mean time.

Mod updated - if you redownload and install, it should work.

You rock. Redownloaded and reinstalled and button is now there in both the board and topic view. Thank you! :)

Hi all,

I think this will be one of the more useful updates in a long while.  Notify Group 1.4 now lets you subscribe entire groups to a board or topic - that is, the group itself is subscribed rather than the members.  This will be useful for forums where membergroups tend to shift around a lot or, for example, if you want a board specifically for staff members who must receive the emails.

As with before, the mod integrates beautifully with the Mailing List mod if you want to also convert your board into a full listserv/mailing list.  It's even more useful now because with a 'group' subscribed to a board instead of a list of members, you can have topics posted in the forums and emailed out automatically without the use of "Announce Topic".

Any questions or requests, let me know.

Quick fix made w/ 1.5.  Turns out enabling notification for a group was actually enabling notification for all groups able to see to the board/topic.  A reinstall fixes this.

You forgot to put value="Go" (button) to language strings. Now is hardcoded value.
For SMF2 — please use $smcFunc['strtolower'] instead of strtolower and $smcFunc['strtoupper']  instead of strtoupper.

You're right, I overlooked those.  The changes have been applied.

Thanks

When I selected notify for a particular group, another page opens with all the members with individual checkboxes.
... I didnt check them and saved but it doesnt seem to send out notifications to the group by only checking the notify group box.

Do all the members need to be check-boxed the first time?

Also, if new members join are they automatically notified or do I have to go through the procedure again - not so clear. I saw a recent reply which suggests any changes in the member group is automatically adjusted for.

pftq

You need to go through two pages whether you notify groups or members.  The second page lets you select group names or member names.  When you click Go from there, the names you selected (and end up subscribing) should show up on a list to the right.

If you subscribe group names instead of individual members, new members that join are automatically notified.
