Hi,

If I want a Charter Membership, that would be for the prebetas, but there is one problem: what if I don't like SMF? Can I say byebye to my money or what? I don't want to pay $50 for nothing if you understand what I mean. :)

Grtz,
sylvester

Jeff Lewis

Currently we don't have a money back policy (we just haven't discussed it yet). So you are better off clicking around here to get a feel for it or visit some of the current Charter Members sites.

Okay, I'll wait for the release. If I like it, I'll donate something. :)

Or you could still buy a Charter Membership, and get the other benefits ;).

That's a possibility, but I want to make sure I like SMF. ;)

I was refering to *after* the public beta.  You can donate if you want, but Charter Membership means you get something in return.  (not just betas.)

Ah, okay. Sorry for my misunderstanding. :P

What if[/b] I don't like it? SMF doesn't have a refund-policy and $ 50 is not nothing. :)

Well we all took the risk that we wouldn't like it, but if you liked the YaBBSE then there is no chance you'll not like SMF.
Just do it, go Charter! [Unknown] offered me a spot on the dev team! I swear it!

"Sup foos'! I'm Marshie! Capital M and then arshie! I'm going this way!!!"

Kris

I donated also because I know developing open source always cost some €'s or $'s.
I support the good work. I like to play around a bit too in PHP though my skills are in C#.

Absolutely if you like YaBBSE I can't see how you would not like this.  I do miss the YaBBSE name though.

My friends forum has SMF and I love it. I signed up for Charter Membership a few hours ago and I can't wait. Vbb is just way too bloated to stand anymore.  :D

I was reading what benefits you get when buy near $50 for Charter Membership, and it was in my mind very little  ???

Only $50 there read, its still a big money for many of us, and you aint really get anything else than software...because most admins install his software self! Soft is what i have heard free, so what is left, in fact nothing? To get some betas or releases few days before others is not worth $50, when remember that this betas is maybe full of small bugs  ::)

Install help and support is free like forum software on many other places, sure you know them all? Feels like pay $50 for nothing...and then, as someone mentioned here, what if i dont like smf software?

That is something to think about, when buy Charter Membership  ;)

Kris

Ever thought about the support for developing all the software you may use for free then???
It wasn't just there one day...
Ever thought what it would cost you when you take a license on a board?

Grudge

Charter Members get priority support included a help desk system. Charter membership may not be for everyone but I personally see it as good more for the support than the betas. Many people run busy forums and need to be able to resolve problems quickly and simply. Plus have you ever heard of giving back to the community? It costs a lot of money to host the servers here and I'm sure many people have joined as charter members as a way of paying back for all the goodwill put into this product.

$50 (£30) a year seems like a bargain for a product of this quality with top notch support with the bonus of getting added features such as betas and if necessary assistance upgrading / installing your forum.

As always that's just my opinion - I personally gain nothing from people paying to become a Charter member but I've seen the support boards and staff here go out of their way to help these people get their forums working :)
I'm only a half geek really...

Roosa

It was not developing we talk about now, to develope for free or for money is up to developer. Other software is not the point. I dont gonna take a license for a hobby board, it is enought to pay for server host and give my users free forum without beg them for money ;D

Roosa, if you don't think the gains outweight the cost... simply don't buy it.  That's economics 101 - in fact, that's even highschool level physics!

For example, a pink dress - for me - would have a much lower util than it might, say, for a woman.  I suppose I could give said dress to a friend, but it's use to me is DIFFERENT than it is to another.

Just because you don't like the deal, doesn't mean everyone else doesn't or shouldn't.  I don't know what you mean to do by making such comments, except cause aggrevation.  Such truly nominative remarks are always unhelpful.

Furthermore, maybe you consider this a "hobby board" and assume that if I decided I wanted to actually go and use my time for the purpose of supporting myself, I couldn't... you can believe that.  The fact is, depending on the client and job, I can make anywhere from $20 to $100 per hour.  I make peanuts doing this, but that doesn't make it just a "hobbyist" thing, and by no means should mean that I and others should have to even LOSE money to support the server.  Again, basic economics - maybe I'm satisfied with the black, but not with the red!

We ARE talking about developing.  A lot of people spend a lot of time on SMF, and it's not even done yet... would you want to spend over a year on something, to have someone make comments such as yours?  Because I have spent over a year on *this*.

I forget to say "its my personal oppinion"  ;D

I haven't said that dont pay for Charter membership, it's free and if someone want to pay, then pay!
I should rater sell SMF software, than ask money for empty things like Charter membership, it would make the payment stright and clear  ;)

Its a trick to beg for money, and personally i dont like such styles. You sell your software or not!
This is not meant to cause aggrevations, and if you take it this way, you are wrong and shortnosed?
This was more meant to make conversations, and i'm very sorry if this hurt you or someone else, sorry  ;D
