Can Anyone tell me how to upgrade from my current 1.1.12 Version to the most reacent version. I would, if possible like to do this without losing any content on my page, and/or its URL.

Couple more questions before I upgrade.
1. Will the current version allow me to personally designs my sites color and images.
2. Will i be able to put my banner up.
3. Can I do all this from the Admin Panel, Id rather not have to go through CPanel.

Matthew K.

1) No
2) Yes
3) For 2, yes.

Take a peak at: Upgrading SMF for detailed instructions on how to upgrade, fairly simple.

Well what in the world, why is this all so complicated. What About being able to Pin topic? or Enable Quick Reply? I just want my Forum to be a different color and to have the Icons for Old and New topics change.

How will I go about adding the Chat on the forum? I saw that there was a package for it and i downloaded it but 1.1 said it wouldn't allow it

Matthew K.

You can sticky a topic by editing "Additional Options" when Modifying/Creating a topic and hitting "Sticky Topic".

Regarding enabling Quick Reply, you can go to Profile > Look and Layout > Quick reply on by default

Also it sounds like you may be more happy on 2.0.

Xero555

Yeah im thinking so because Im not getting the options im needing. Thanks for your help. Now i will go and try to upgrade without ruining everything.

Matthew K.

I am going to go ahead and leave this topic un-resolved until you have successfully finished your upgrade. Feel free to post any questions here during the process and we'll do our best to help you out.

please do a database backup before you attempt the upgrade. How do I backup my database?

Matthew K.

I do believe that is one of the first things in the "Upgrading SMF" documentation, Illori.

does not hurt to mention it again, sometimes people forget or bypass parts.

Matthew K.

You're right. :)

Well I went through the all the steps and directions (Reading) and I have to say, Im still just as confused as ever. I apologize for all the questions. I know how tedious newbs to technology are but things have changed alot since I last ran a site. Is there anything that would make the steps more simple. I made sure I ran Backup and saved my files (even tho theres really nothing there) but after that the steps have me lost.

I have Cpanel since I am using a host. And I have saved the ZIP Upgrade Package in Large i believe is what it was. Now there is something about Unzipping the files and doing some odd and end stuff like permissions setting? Im so confused. I know what permissions are, and how they work, but where do I set them and how do i get to them.

Is there possible a step by step tutorial that I would be able to watch. Im sure if I tinked around Id figure it out, but i would like this to go right the first time around.

Matthew K.

I would offer to do it for you, although I have quite a few things on my schedule that I already said I'd do as of now.

Basically, after backing up the files and database, uninstall all of your mods, upload the Large Upgrade zip to your forums directory, extract the zip, and then visit yourdomain.com/yourforumslocation/upgrade.php and complete the upgrade process.

In cPanel, you can click "File Manager" > then go to public_html/whereveryourforum is > hit "Upload" > upload the large upgrade zip > Right click the large upgrade zip and click "Extract" > Then visit the upgrade.php file in your forums location.

If you can't get it, and my schedule clears up shortly, I will offer to do it for you.

Ill give it a go. Those were much more focused directions thank you. Also, it may please you to know, this is my last issue. I tinked around and figured out most of my problems. Once i get the forum set up Im basically set, so thank you very much for dealing with me. And yes, if you get the opp in your time to help me that would be much appreciated. Thanks for all the help once agian!

If i have any info to offer ill drop by and help you guys out assisting members with issues where i can.
Can i request this page stay open till completed with upgrade? Just in case more communication is needed?

Matthew K.

definitely. We'll only mark this topic as resolved when you're done.

For me At birth Apparently. Maybe I should find a new past time lol. Best way to learn is hands on tho. let me go through the steps i did.

First I downloaded the Large Zip Upgrade.
Went in to Downloads and unziped it.
Went to CPanel File Manager
Went to Public_HTML (Can only acesses main page domain)
Found the Forum folder and uploaded the Zip'd File (UnZipped wouldnt load)
Went back into file manager after uploaded and Extracted Files....
....And thats about it.

I tried after doing that to go into the forum and Find the File, but could not find it in packaged and couldnt find how to upgrade. Like I said, i think i missed or by-passes a crucial step.

On the Bright side i tried it first on a different forum (Backup forum) and destroyed it. I came to the conclusion that was my own mishap though, it was a phpBB forum...so yeah im sure you can guess how that went wrong. Then I tried it on my Actual Forum and thats about as far as I got, forum is still operational tho.

Not like ive put to much hard work into the forum, but upgrading is about the last thing i need to do before I launch my site and Advertise.

Illori

you are upgrading 1.1.12 to what version?

Matthew K.

Xero555

Yes. The Most current version. I failed at my attempts to upgrade. I never really had a reason to pay for a host before so I used Invision, on there everything is right there. Or at least used to be if memory serves. If the offer still stands to have it done for me I would be much appreciative.
If you did however would you need my Cpanel or Just Forum Link and Login?

Either way, thanks for the help everyone.
