Keeping sessions alive across sub-domains?

I have SMF installed on www.mysite.com/forum/ and I'm using SSI.php across other pages on the site and all is working grand, now I'm adding a new section to my site under, extra.mysite.com, is there anyway to keep the session alive when a user goes from www.mysite.com to extra.mysite.com?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

in admin -> server settings -> cookies and sessions do you have use subdomain independent cookies checked?
