Hide forum from search engines

I'm looking for a way to hide my forum from search engines as another layer of security from spammers.

I read a post here http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=40721.msg296292#msg296292

this post said updating my robots.txt file would make it stop indexing the forum files.

Is this the best way of achieving this?
