Can simplemachines be slowing my forum down?

My forum is sluggish since yesterday. My hosting service says their system is find.

When I login as admin i get message that I am unable to connect to simple machines news servers.

How many places does our smf forums try to connect to when we load a php page?

Is there a way to prevent that just to test where the slow down is coming from?

Try Admin>Forum Maintenance>Database> Optimize Tables
Admin>Forum Maintenance>"Check all files against current versions" and make sure you have the latest files
on the same page as above: "Empty the file cache"

This might not completely solve it but it will help

The admin area is the only place where SM servers can have any affect on your forum. So, even if you have to wait a while to load the news, or can't load them at all - it will not have any effect on your forums performance
