How Do I Restore Forum Database?

I am using Hostgator and I tried to restore a previous version of my database and it went totally wrong. How do I do this? I have no database experience, any help would be appreciated my entire site is down.

As long as you have a full backup of your database it should be easy enough to restore your forum. How did you create the database backup?

**First off Backup your forum directory and database just incase you can't restore an older version of the database.

Is the current version and old version of SMF the same?

I restored the database, but now the site is blank... I ran the upgrade and it's still blank. It's like nothing is there.

I created the backup through the download backup thing on the database maintence on SMF.
