I think this way (gradual expansion) is really cooler that the one applied so far . I guess it should be easy to implement?

Yes, but how can it be done? Does SMF come with jQuery?

No, at this stage SMF does not come with jQuery. There is probably an existing jQuery plugin that will do the job though. I would suggest searching the jQuery site if you want to find one.
