View Only Boards in 2.0

I have just upgraded from 1.1.8 to 2.0.  So far, I love the new forum and the new features.

However:

I like to keep my forums almost as standard as possible, but there are two mods which I think are essential:

1/  users online today
2/  view only boards

The first mod installed correctly but the second will not (even thought the mod says it is compatible with 2.)

I find it VERY frustrating that I cannot use this mod on 2.0 or indeed that it is not a standard feature on 2.0

The forum I have just upgraded has only one board which is for members eyes only, so with it missing the forum still looks busy to non-members before they join.  However, next my list is another 1.1.8 forum which needs to go to 2.0 which has ALL of the boards as View Only boards.  Currently, non-members can see all 35 boards (although they cannot see inside) and this encourages them to join.  However, if I cannot use View Only Boards on this forum once upgraded to 2.0, non-members will only see a blank page asking them to log in.

Is there anyway to either use View Only Boards mod on 2.0 or to mod the forum itself to make certain boards view only?

you would need some type of mod for that, check the mod site for other similar mods or request one to be created.

It is unfortunate that the mod's author has abandoned the mod. Some of its users are discusing bugfixes right now http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=146964.msg3155358#msg3155358

Why not make a suggestion in the features request board to add this as a feature in a future version of SMF?

Because this is not a feature of SMF 2.0, I am marking your question solved.

Actually, it has been updated and I am now using it on three 2.0 forums.  It works great, but I really don't understand why it isn't a standard feature on the 2.0

I'm so glad it is working now!
I don't think very many users have suggested this as a standard feature for SMF -- certainly not enough of them to make the team believe it is highly-requested.

The mod request is a good idea.  A feature request is a good idea, too. Make reference to the feature lists for other forum software, and see how many people "pile on" to the request.
