I'm just kinda thinking out-loud, with this...

As we quite often get requests along the lines of "How do I change the text of the welcome mail" and such things, how easy (Or not) would it be, to make these things easily user-configurable?

Say, have an Admin section, where these things appear, much like the theme files do, in Themes>ThemeName>Browse the templates and files in this theme does, where they can be edited.

Would the "effort for gain" be too much, to achieve this?

in 2.0 you can edit the language strings in the admin panel by default. i think the only one you can not edit in the admin panel is the email template.

kat

Really?

I've never come-across that.

* K@ goes moochin'...

Illori

admin -> languages click language name and go from there

Matthew K.

Oh wow, I've never seen that before. It's hidden pretty well.

kat

I tried that and didn't see owt.

* K@ mooches further...

"Owt" is Northern English for "Anything". :)

I finally found those strings.

I think cracking the DaVinci code was easier.

OK. New observation: That should be made a LOT more obvious. :)

Illori

in what way would you want it more obvious?

kat

"To change the text for some of the forum's text strings, click on the name of the language file and..." might go some way.

Norv

I have to agree it's kind of ... easy to miss, as it is, for some reason.

* Norv wonders if it's documented in the wiki, too.
To-do lists are for deferral. The more things you write down the later they're done... until you have 100s of lists of things you don't do.

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Languages_-_How_do_I_add_a_new_language is the closest page to this request, but it is not really on that page. nor do we have a page on the languages page in admin panel on the wiki that i can see.

kat

I've already made a suggestion to Angel, about that. :)

Robert.

I'm sorry to use your topic K@ but I'd like to see an option to create a new language based on the default language (like that option in the themes page). I know you can do it manually too, but it's a horrible job to copy and rename every file.

kat

Actually, it IS there...

What I'm gonna do, unless somebody squeaks, is add something about this to the FAQ.

Illori

that page just got edited today ;)

kat

Ah. The wonders of teknoligy, huh? ;)

There seems to be quite a bit of this sort of thing in our templates. A tad more rethunking is necessary methinkses.

kat
