Hi Sir/Madam,

Question1. Can show to the users, about both old and new unread message, CLEARLY. (as
some other software, ignore to show old unread, as "read" due to last login, even we haven't read;

example say. last time I open the topic, only read 3 of 5 of messages.
and then I re-logic, and go to same topic,

=> Can 2.xversion show there are still "2" unread messages?

Question2. as forum-topic, have 3 persons, A, B  and C. A reply to B, not to group, could can
let C "also" read the ALL message from A & B.

example say. user-A create a topic, and added user-B and user-C,
and then user-A have some question which "specially" want user-B to answer,
user-A then post a message to "user-B", but not to the "topic"

=> Can 2.x version let user-C, also read "all" what user-A sent to user-B too

SMF shows all messages that you have not read (by clicking the link) or marked as read (by clicking a button)
SMF does NOT mark topics read just because you went away/logged out.

In other words, you have 10 topics unread. You logout and back in. You still have 10 topics unread.

thank!

>> 1. how about if single(same/one) topic, with 10 unread messages/reply/post etc?
      2. will it contains the unread message from last post?
      3. in case, last time, I just "click" into the topic, without "Actual" read "All" the content,
next time, it only show the unread message after my last "click",
      4. is there any "button", "flag" can let user "click" which messages are read under "same" topic.
ie. last time, i read 5 out of 8 topics, and then 4 news come afterward,
thus, next time, I login, will show there is (8-5) + 4 = 7 unread message under "this" topic.

many many thank!

Although SMF will detect if there are unread PAGES in a thread/topic, it can not mark individual messages in the thread as unread.

So, if you go to the topic and read 4 of the 10 message sin the thread (which only has one page of messages) then the entire thread will be marked as read.   That's all that can be done.
However, if the thread has 50 new messages in it, and you only read the first page (of 25), then the second page of 26-50 will still be marked as unread.

oh! thx!
I think that it is already quite good!
is it better than vbulletin?
thx!

NanoSector

I don't know how vBulletin handles this, but I guess it will handle this the same way as SMF does.
It really would be a pain to create a system that checks for every post ;)

Good! thx!

1. Can I start to try, by "install" SMF2.x in WinXP system? without problem..
or better install in win server?

2. Any guildline links? "step-by-step" in detail and snapshot?
ie. from apache, mysql, phpadmin, and then to SMF installation etc.

3. Is SMF fully compariable with "Chinese" system?

4. Can SMF also do "instant messaging"?
*even receipt side off-line, and he can read while next login?

5. Do SMF 2.x, provide Blog feature(s) too?

many thank!

1. You can use WAMPServer on your Windows XP system.

2. See above. Create a directory with any name in C:\wamp\www directory (or wherever you installed Wamp). Just copy the SMF files into the C:\wamp\www\(your own directory) directory, launch "http://localhost/(the directory you created). The SMF installer will then guide you through the setup.

3. If you install a chinese language pack, of course it is :)

4. If provides Personal Messaging (it's like e-mail), but you can also install portals with chatboxes or just stand-alone chatboxes.

5. You can install a package for this, I know a package called "ADK Blog".

Good luck! :)

Wonderful, thx!

1. if I need to edit the format of forum layout(all levels, from forum to topic), is it easy?
by what ... [tool(s)/software/utility]? or need some programming?
*especially, the height  of text box,  as we want the users, to read as much as possible
per pages.  (if  SMF can auto height, by text content, it will be fine?!)

2. how about the forum content, need any ..."action/convert",
if I [first] build by ms win-"xp",
and then, transfer to ms win-7 or ms server-2008? etc

3. do u think it is suitable for corporate internal use?
why and how it can help the communication among the depts/staffs?

thx!

1. Well, if you need to change the layout as in editing templates, you would need to know HTML, CSS and a tiny bit of PHP (as that isn't really required, but useful if you break something).
On my Windows machines, I use Notepad++ ;)
As for the text box, you mean the messages page, right? If so, that automatically resizes.
As for the textbox at the reply page, you can resize it at your own needs by grabbing the handle below it.

2. Well, you can just transfer your files.
Then, you can create a backup, or "Export" really, of your database in phpMyAdmin, which can be accessed at "http://localhost/phpmyadmin".

3. I use it all the time for internal testing :)
It helps a lot, since when you install WAMPP on all machines with the same settings, you just have to share forum files and SQL files and everybody has the same configuration it's plug-'n-play.

I hope this helps you :)

It's the same, it's just that I'm lazy and don't want to type out "WAMPServer" each time ;)

You can get it from the link I provided :)
It's a simple program which can just be installed and deinstalled like every other Windows program.

Well, as I said it's the same product, just different names :P
I'm not entirely sure if it works on an internal LAN network, but you can probably setup one computer with the program and link the others to the IP of that computer, as long as it's on your own network :)

Yesh, that's exactly it! :)

Number 3 is optional, but I guess it would be good if you could read the forum in your own language :)

Good luck with setting it up, and if something doesn't work, just come here, shouting :)

EDIT: You don't need any utility or update. What you listed is all you need to get started with SMF :)
