Error while installing mods

Please help. While I was installing a mod, SMF asked for my FTP details. After I clicked on install, I got the following error message:

QuoteThe server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log.

Since I thought it had been the mod's fault, I went to get support at its developer's site. They asked me to show them my ManageSettings.php and my Display.template.php files. They confirmed that the mod never got installed, so it was not the fault of that specific mod.

I'm thinking that SMF tried to change something and broke it. What would you suggest me to do? Please help, nothing on my board can be accessed, not even the Admin CP.

Colin

Are you able to access the index of your forum without it throwing that error, at this time.?

Do you know how to use CHMOD?

Thank you for replying. No, I'm still unable to access any pages on my forum. I even went to my browser's History to go to specific boards and I still get the same message.

I know how to change a file's permissions in FTP. Is that CHMOD?

Colin

Yikes, I have had this happen and it is a gigantic pain.

Yeah, CHMOD is file permissions. Do a quick scan through the files and folders and make sure nothing looks out of the ordinary. Check with your host and see if everything in your account folder has the correct CHOWN ownership.

Did you happen to take a backup prior to installing the mod?

Unfortunately no.....the last time I backuped my forums was on Thursday, and since then I've created several boards and installed several mods....I never thought something so bad could happen :S

Is there a way to get a list of the file permissions, or do I have to look at them one by one? I use FileZilla and SmartFTP.

I am currently chatting with my server's customer support, so I'll ask them about the CHOWN ownership.

pastorvictor

I think it was a server issue, my forums are back!! I'm currently backing everything up lol. I'm not gonna risk losing everything.

Thank you for your help anyway. I'm glad this was fixed :)

Colin

Good deal. My pleasure. I will go ahead and mark this one as solved. If anything else comes up please don't hesitate to let us know.
