I'm getting a message in red at the top of my forums saying:

!! Performance Warning

The cache directory is not writable - this will adversely affect the performance of your forum.

Any one know what it is? Thanks.

Colin

Open your FTP client and CHMOD the /cache directory inside of the SMF root to 755

How do I chmod? / what is chmod?

It's not a mod. It's something you do from your hosting control panel, you change the permissions of that folder.

No. Colin is implying that you read the provided links so you have a better understanding of what chmod is.

For what it's worth, that link doesn't work (possibly due to the recent changes made to remove references to the old doc site).

In which case, the 'Useful Manual Links' dropdown on quick reply needs some work.

While we're on the subject, it would be lovely if http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Spam_-_my_forum_is_flooded_with_spam,_what_can_I_do could be added to that.

Cool thanks guys, thanks for links, ill get back to you.

Strange... Cache directory already has permission: 755 :(

Arantor

Try 775 and if that doesn't work, 777.
