I'm curious...it seems that a number of sites, notably slashdot.org, handle this kind of threaded message format very capably.

The Slashdot boards are threaded and load via ajax as you drill down into a topic. Is there a reason why the same or similar approach couldn't be done with SMF. (??)

For one, we apparently have a very different definition of "capably"

For two,  the data design of smf makes such a format difficult, at best.... 

For three, as has already been expressed...  "Threaded view" discourages conversation and is overall an outdated and mostly worthless format, IMO...
