Might take a little while for that.
If you don't want to wait for a package to be released/announced, you can just grab the latest files from GitHub and open any issues or pull requests

Because 3.0 is the future, 2.1 isn't going to get significant feature development at this point (as it has *always* been)

It has been archived. Even though it didn't have code, we shouldn't delete any public code.

The team that builds SMF do a great job! I am looking forward to seeing it turns out, and how the new features improve the overall package.

I await the day when screenshots might be shared.

There isn't much noticeable difference between 2.1 and 3.0 from a user standpoint. There are a few admin-side changes (friendly URLs, different search index options, different way of handling events/holidays) and the ability to create recurring events on the user side, but beyond that you won't see much difference at this point. The majority of the changes have been to the code itself. A new theme is in the works as well but is still in development.
