Total registered member count- how to make it viewable in index.template.php

Hello.

I've been stumped on this issue for quite some time- and I searched the forum and wasn't able to find any solution to my problem. I'm using the SMF forum, and I included a header and a footer into it. In my header, I put in the total member count script  (  $modSettings['totalMembers']  ). The problem is; I can't view this script in action when viewing the forum (index.template, or any page for that matter.) It's functional on my home page though, so I'm stumped! Is there anyway to fix this? Thanks for any help.

By the way; SMF version: SMF 1.1 RC1.
