I would love to see 15 customizable fields for the profile, like dropdowns with some values you can add to them, date fields, text fields, numeric...

In that way you could collect more data of your members, like when you have a board for a fanclub, a.s.o.

If I would run a forum for expats I would like to know where they come from, where they live now, since when.... and then make stats viewable in charts ;)

Yes, this would be a great feature, very much needed, imo.

That's a nice idea due to the amount of people wanting to add more fields to their forums. That said I would imagine it is more likely to be something of a mod than included by default. It would need its own section in the admin screen to configure it - hence I imagine it will be an add on. I really would like to see it though - it would be something to set SMF apart from the rest

I was thinking about it, and why not just do it with ALTER TABLE?  That would be soo much simpler...

Yep I was thinking the same thing. Just have some sort of basic table editor that could add new columns to the members table. Better as a mod IMO though.

Justyne

That feature would be more than great! I would really like that.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.

I've always wanted something like this... this would make our communities a bit more modular.

Having x amount of fields that can be customized - drop down, text, radio button, etc would be great as well.

I look forward to seeing this one.

Grudge

Hey,

just wanted to say I just started coding up this last night. Basically you can add an unlimited amount of custom fields to the profile - either single line text, multi-line text or an image. I don't know whether it will make it into SMF full but it should certainly make it as a mod.

What I want to know is whether it is important/pointfull to anyone to have more types of fields bar image/text. Maybe link? I can't see the point in radio/check box's etc but if someone can really justify it then maybe....

Also at the moment all the fields are put on the summary screen for display and personal screen for editing. Again this seems fine to me unless people can say otherwise!

Nice one Grudge.

Would the additions appear only in the members "Profile" or would they also be able to be included in the topic display profile section?

At the moment it's only in the profile section. Would be quite a lot more coding. I'll come back to that later if necessary :)

Excellent!

I think fields, images, and links are a great starter... but what about Drop-Down menus?

For instance, in my community, we have 15 armies, so if the admin can specify the 15 armies in the field, and the user can choose his army(ies).  And the drop-drown items can be text / image / combo.

This would be cool for sports sites too where they can choose their teams, etc.

Just a thought...

Either way, I think it's great that you're doing this!

Cheers

Actually, Grudge, in theory - this is already there.  The only thing is that view profile and Display can't get to it - at the moment.

Raine

oh my goodness... stop it with the teasing already! :D

klumy

It would be great, if following SMF versions would support extended profiles !! ;)

Tyris

heheh, I was certain I'd heard [Unknown] mention the fact that you could already add fields, and then include them in various places on the board or something...
A truly awesome feature if I do say so myself... which I do ^_^

Damn you and your efficiency!!!!

So you can add new fields without actually going into profile.php itself? Just when I thought I'd managed to do something useful I get beaten to it :D

Grudge, how are things going?
This is one reason why I would advice a lot of people to switch to a certain board!

Grudge

Well... it kinda didn't happen. After U said most of it was done I left it and went on to other things. If nothing happens about this (and I doubt it will) I'll do my best to MOD it. I can't see it making it into the first version. Sorry!! :(

Actually... uhh... this is, err... how can I say it?  Well.. I guess...

It's done ;).

There's just no admin interface... right now, it's more of a template system thing... but it IS there.  And it IS ready.  And it DOES work.  On Display AND Profile!

I would really like this feature for my members.
They could then precisely put more information on their person...
I run a forum of mixed-couples and I'd like them to give the opportunity to let others know where there partner is from, when they got the papers etc etc...
