Not receiving board message reply notifications

SMF Version: SMF 1.1 RC2
I have a problem with my forum - Users (and even myself as admin) are not receiving notifications for replies when they have board notification set. Emails are sent for new topics to these boards, but not for replies.

This problem is occuring with the following settings:

Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email - checked
Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply - unchecked
Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic - checked
When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email - checked

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of: Replies and Moderation

I would really appreciate it if anyone has any ideas how to fix this - many of my users are missing important messages.

I know I am not the only one out there with this problem - it seems to me there have been issues with this throughout the development of SMF. Its an incredible board, but surely there must be a way to sort out these notification problems.

Should I try again and see if I can get this post noticed by the development team. Surely this is something that needs to be fixed.

Hi Will - the admin panel is set up for users to be able to receive notifications, but emails are not being sent on replies to messages unless they have contributed to the thread, even if they have the option to receive all replies checked in their profile.

Could someone at least just tell me that they don't have this problem at all - I would really like to know if it is somehow a problem with my installation or whether it is still a known bug with the forum.

Hi. I am having the same problems. My configuration is: Joomla 1.08, smf 1.1 rc2. I´d seen many user with that problem but nobody knows how to fix it.

I thought I was going crazy. I am running PHP 4.3.11 and SMF 1.1 RC2 and I think that I have had this problem ever since I started using the forum well over a year ago.

Are there any developers out there who can help.

I'm also experiencing the same problem. Earlier versions of SMF worked fine, as far as I can recall, but RC2 doesn't seem to send out notifications of topic replies - at least not always. But notifications of new topics are always sent correctly.

Yes. Only occurs with notifications replies.

Just to concur - the problem for me is only with replies also.

Well, I dont think I have the problem, its not really a feature I use...  It may be somthing to do with your server, contact your host.

I host my own server and there are no issues that should have any impact so far as I can tell.

I have been able to narrow down the problem. The problem with not receiving notifications only occur if it's on a board that I also have notifications of new topics enabled on. If I turn off new topic notification for the board in question, then reply notifications work fine and is sent.

So obviously there is some sort of collision between new topic and reply notifications.

Can any developer confirm if this is a bug in RC2?

Well, with something like that happening, Im pretty certain it would be a bug rather than a problem with your server/install.

Ok...  just tested. Daniel, please confirm this is the problem:
1- turn on notifications of new topics in a specific board (General Discussion)
2- turn on notification of new replies in a specific thread (test thread)
3- Someone posts a new topic in (General Discussion)
4- someone posts a new reply in (test thread)

You are saying that in this scenario 4 does not send a notification?

I just tested and received a notification for both 3 and 4.

To clarify my problem again:

With board notifications selected I get an email for new topics, but not for replies to existing topics that I have not contributed to, even though in my profile I have the following settings:

I always get notification of replies to topics where I have contributed and selected - 'Notify Me of Replies'

ah...

so
1- new topic in a board
2- new reply to a topic you have contributed to
3- new reply in a topic you have never contributed to and have never specifically requested notification on.


you do not get notified in the case of #3. This is correct behaviour.

board notifications only notify you of new topics in the board.
the checkbox that you indicate only turns on notifications for specific topics when you actually post in them.

in the case of #3, if you go into a topic and specifically request a notification, then you will be informed of new replies, even if you have never posted in the topic.... but if you do not specifically request notifications, then the system will not send them to you for threads that you have not posted in.

In the Profile/Notifications and Email settings it says:

For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of: Replies and Moderation

To me, that suggests that I should be able to get notification of replies to any topic on any board to which I have selected notification for (that is, board notification, not topic notification), whether I contribued to it or not. As a user I think it is important to be able to get these, without having to specifically subscribe to each
topic. I often like to be able to follow all discussions on a board.

I think that if I subscribe to a board and say that I want to be notified of Replies and Moderation, I should receive notification whenever anything is posted in any message in the entire board - this has been requested by many of our users.

Is there any way to make this happen? If not, I would like to request it as an option for SMF.

Please let me know if I haven't been clear.

I understand what you are asking now, but the answer is... you are mis-interpreting the text.

notify me of new topics in boards I have specifically requested notification on.
notify me of new replies in topics that I have specficially requested notification on.

it has been shortened to fit... but that's what it means.

board notification is ONLY new topics... board notification does NOT notify you of new replies within topics.
