Ok, i just wanna take you just a quick look at my first modification for the SMF 2.0.

It's a gallery with the normal functions a gallery just should have...  ;)

What i plan:

Multiple pictures-Upload
Pictures are shown in three sizes: On most pages as thumb, on the picture-view as a midsize-picture, and after click on it, in normal-size
Different Watermarks for the picture per album
Different positions for the watermarks chooseable
Possibility for multiple delete or movement of pictures
Possibility to comment pictures
Rating pictures
Sub-Albums (up to 3)
Download album as ZIP-File
User can add albums as sub-album
User-Rights are defined in so called categories, each album can have another category
Latest Pictures are shown on the index-page of the gallery
Random Pictures are shown on the index-page of the gallery
Stats about amount of pictures, comments, etc. are shown on the index-page of the gallery

These are the first things i'll plan.

What i got till now (started yesterday):

Index-Page of the gallery (the main-page...)
5 Last Thumb-Pictures are shown on the main-page
5 Random Thumb-Pictures are shown on the main-page
View Album-Page
View Picture
Upload of 1 picture per upload possible

Next to come:
Edit picture-data
Page-Navigation
Including Text-Editor
Adding Comments

Hope, you'll like it.

Oh, yes, the pictures are in german and yes, there are some women on them (don't mind, i just had to take some pictures for testing, right)?  ;D

I'll change the language later on.

DoctorMalboro

Nice gallery, i like the pictures... :P

You could also add the gallery to the profile or on the bottom of the signature.

zheobitt

Still much work to do.

Gallery at the bottom of the signature? So like kind of advertisment? Maybe later.

zheobitt

How can i add a signature? Ich checked the profile-settings, but couldn't find anything

Illori

you can not add a signature until you get to a certain number of posts.

zheobitt

Ah, i see. And how many postings?

Arantor

10, I think the requirement here is.

kingkingston

how will it be different from the other gallery mod ?

Masterd

zheobitt

@kingston: I dunno. I haven't looked after the other gallery mods yet. I would say, to be fair for all, just test it, when its finished.

TomW

I like it !  Some suggestions for you:
1. ability to display the bbcode, so that you can easily add a picture from the gallery into a post
2. ability to remove the text below the pictures
3. sub-galleries with an image, displayed in the 'main' gallery
4. from the 'main' gallery, if a user clicks on an image, they go to the sub-gallery

if you added media to it, so you could ad video's to it as well, you would be on to a winner.Nao had a aeva media mod and still does but i think he stopped the free version of it.

anyway here's the link to the gallery mod, just to give you a heads up on any ideas already not covered.

He did but only after a bucketfull of crap. It will live on, but I don't think it will for SMF users.

zheobitt

Tomorrow i will set up a test-board so you can have a look, how far it's done. :)

You can look, but not upload.

TwitchisMental

Just something to think about, I have noticed other gallery mods for smf are a bit large and complex.  Will this one be small and simple, if so you have yourself a user :D.

Arantor

Speaking as someone sort of responsible for supporting Aeva, I have to say that the minute users find something 'small and simple', there are so many requests to make it more complicated. And if you want it to have a decent level of functionality, it has to be complicated.

zheobitt

You can't keep a gallery small and simple, not from the code-side and so. On the front-end i'll try to keep it easy of use.

zheobitt

Strange. I set up a test forum on one of my domains, but when i call up the gallery i got the message:

Unable to load the 'gallery' template.

I checked all, is's all the same as on my local testboard.

zheobitt

O.k., got it solved. I wrote the name of template wrong. *whops*

zheobitt

Ok, the board is setup. The adress is:

www.harald-thomsen.de/smf

The gallery is still in german, this will be changed later on. This is more to be thought of getting a first look. Lot of things still missing.

kingkingston

its not too bad, if i click on a picture i wouldn't want it to go to a page like this
http://www.harald-thomsen.de/smf/gallery/img/1/maurice_05012011.jpg, id rather it jump out at me like the aeva media mod does, don't know what that setting is called though

AST3R1X

Yes I prefer Highslide too  :)

you following me around everywhere lol

Arantor

Highslide has limitations on use, however, specifically that if your site is taking in money, even just to cover costs, you have to buy a licence.

i just like it better than going to a blank page and having to click the back button

Arantor

Yes, but do you run a site that makes any money of any kind?

i don't actually use that mod, is there a mod that provides that kind of slide like that for free ?, just trying to help this guy out.

Arantor

Yes, Highslide does! And it's free for non-commercial use. But including it in a package is dubious for that very reason. It's why Aeva has a specific enable/disable option for it.

zheobitt

So, you want to have the picture to be loaded inside of a lightbox, i assume? Isn't that problem.

Atm, i'm looking after the permissions. How do i check a permisson in SMF? Sorry, if i ask that much, but mostly i know only the vb-code. :)

Up to three ways depending on what you're trying to do. I'd suggest having a read of http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=345127.0 personally ;)

grafitus

Plans are good. But I think you should try a little more on design. ;)

zheobitt

@Arantor: For the permissions. I've to check which usergroup may have a look at an album and which not. Or may delete or move pictures or not.

@grafitus: The design will be changed, yes. But this is one of the last things.

Arantor

In which case you're going to do what the other gallery mods did and implement your own table for tracking group access and your own UI for managing it. The tutorial I linked (and wrote) is geared for general permissions access throughout the forum and adding facilities that way.

zheobitt

Ah, ok, i've already thought this. Mh, isn't so much a problem, i think. Thanks for the hint.

zheobitt

O.k., i've got it. Now it's possible to define in the categories, if user may see that one, may upload, delete or move pictures. I've tested it on my local testboard and it works like charm.

zheobitt

So, just a quick update today :)

Permissions looking good and are working like a charm. Following setting can be done per usergoup:

Check if group:
- may see an album (can be set for each album via the categories)
-may delete or move pictures (can be set for each album via the categories)
-can upload pictures (can be set for each album via the categories)
-uploaded pictures have to be moderated,
-can comment pictures,
-can edit comments,
-can delete comments,

Also it can be set, quality, height and width of thumbs, number of pictures to be uploaded, the maximum numbers of pictures which can be uploaded, maximum size, maximum width and maximum height. And if usergroup may see the gallery at all.

Oh, one explanation of those categories. Each category defines, if for example an album is only "personal", so that only a special usergroup may see the album. And so on.

Hope you like my way of doing it.

Arantor

Sounds good to me, but as ever the proof will be in the use of it.

Masterd

Just continue with this project! :D

zheobitt

Tomorrow i'll post some new pics.

zheobitt

So, here are two new pictures from the gallery.

One show's the well known album-view in the way, the admin see the album. Notice the input-fields for checkings. These are used for selectings pictures which can be moved or deleted. Normal user will not see them.

The other one shows the main-settings of the gallery (i'll post an english version later, excuses for the german words. But it's easier to do it for me this way).

Hope you like it.

kingkingston

zheobitt

Thanks.

I've updated my homepage.

Here a direct link for the album-view:

http://www.harald-thomsen.de/smf/index.php?action=gallery;area=viewcat;cid=1

Hope, you like this design a bit more.

What changed?

Added an admin-section (can be reached at the bottom of the gallery, viewable for anyone). ATM i don't know right, how to insert it into the standard-admin-section, so i did this way. Normaly it's only accesable for admins.

In the admin-section you can set different options, add categories or edit them and add new albums. That's so far working.

Now i'm going to work further on :-)

zheobitt

Oh, i've recognized that guests can't see any albums. I'll fix this soon.

[Update] O.k., Problem fixed. I've updated my homepage. If you view the pictures, you can see, that there is something new (not working atm). Over the picture you are viewing are shown 5 pictures from the album, so you can move directly through the album. As said, this isn't working for now, i will code this later this day.

Built in the EXIF-Data, which can be shown under the picture. And the comment-function, for adding comments to the pictures.

zheobitt

O.k., today i built in my own pagination. Works like charm and was easy to do...

Soon i'll pack it all together and send a first version to some betatester. If someone wants?

zheobitt

Which EXIF-Informations would you find usefull?

becometa

I can be the testing guy

EXIF tags? Hmm, dunno, maybe

Date and time
FileSource
SensitivityType
Compression

there are too many of them in the EXIF documentation... I do not know what to choose.

zheobitt

Just a quick notice: I'm working on the multi-upload, and fixing some last bugs.

Where can i find infos, how to make a package of this mod?

zheobitt

Atm i'm very busy in my free time. So i think it'll be may before i return to this project.
