My first step would be to get your forum up and running.

Asking users to sign up on your back up Invision Power Board won't win you any friends :D

A domain and a custom design would be a good start

For better visibility on google, you will need to increase your PR, which is a direct result of backlinks.

How do you do that?

You don't (other people do it for you by linking to you).

Yes I see I wish smf had a refferal mod that would get people.. lol

Smf is the best service. I hate to admit it but I used to use ipb2.2 nulled [illegal] but I felt guilty and switched to smf. Smf is just about the same thing except for the fancy assistant center and user portal/blog

Well now, technically speaking... isn't just posting in forums and including your web address in your signature a "backlink" ???

Or doesn't it really help much?  LOL!

Assuming your signature includes a link to your forum *and* the forums you post to are properly indexed by search engines then, sure, it's a backlink and you're not absolutely dependent on others to do it for you. But how much does it help? Well, that still depends on so many factors (so how long is a piece of string?)...

It doesn't really help.

A lot of forums have the "no follow" tag implemented, which means it doesn't even count as a backlink. Furthermore, google devalues backlinks from signatures.

So, it really doesn't make much of a difference. I put my website in the sig because I get some traffic from it (about 10 clicks/day).

Darn... well my site's only been up for a few months... I read all the SEO newsletters that I get and some say post on forums and include your address in your sig... but I agree with ephemeral, it's not just about page rank on google... it's about advertising in general.  Google is great, but there are lots of other ways to get your name out there.

Putting your web address in your sig and posting on other forums (um, post interesting stuff... actually partcipate like I am here...don't just spam!)... join in on yahoo answers and link to your forum as a location where people can find more information on the answer you gave... yahoo search is GREAT at including yahoo answers! (if you can stand the stupid questions people are BOUND to ask!)

Set up free websites (generally you get one from your IP... then there's geocities, yahoo profiles, things like that) and put links to your site with the hope someone stumbles upon your info on a free site... if you use yahoo to IM and CHAT, this will of course get more people to care to look at your profile and maybe click on your site link.  I set up a free profile on MySpace as well... you'd be surprised how many people get bored and just search the heck out of that community - I'm NOT really a MySpace user, but I post something in the blog now and then... put up a stupid video and keyword the heck out of... oh yes, people ARE coming from there... I don't have much there really, but they are making thier way!

So again, don't know how much those ideas will actually work to get rank with Google, but they do get some traffic... I have 24 registered members on my forum... most don't post, but they HAVE actually registered and only a FEW are people I personally know and sent there!  The forum's only been up for 2 months... so it's proof that it works, if only a little!

I don't know much about adding keywords and metatags in the forum itself... but if you try to get pagerank to your main site you should of course do that, then link to your forum.

You could always offer to help out on other sites. Other webmasters are starting out too and you can do post exchanges/write articles in exchange for activity or ads. You might even become good friends with the admin and then you'll have a good posting member who can help you on your boards with increasing the appearance of activity.
