Aligning the smilies

Hi,

does anybody know in which file I can find the line where the smilies  are adressed to show up?

I have some problem with the output. The smilies are always a little bit higher than the text is  . I want them to be in line with the text and not above or below. As I can see with this text it is the same 

Has it something to do with the size of the gifs?

Is it possible to bring the smilies to the middle of the line-height so it looks right?
