Having run my forum for a couple of weeks now, I am getting the message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/llan5242/public_html/board/Settings.php on line 30

BUT I have done nothing at all to the program.

What has happened please?

Thanks

Martin

The lines below are 27-31 (31 being blank)

# Note: If $maintenance is set to 2, the forum will be unusable!  Change it to 0 to fix it.
$maintenance = 0;      # Set to 1 to enable Maintenance Mode, 2 to make the forum untouchable. (you'll have to make it 0 again manually!)
$mtitle = 'Maintenance Mode';      # Title for the Maintenance Mode message.
$mmessage = 'Okay faithful users...we\'re attempting to restore an older backup of the database...news will be posted once we\'re back!';      # Description of why the forum is in maintenance mode.

This problem surpised me because the program has worked perfectly before.

Everything seems fine.
Try replacing this with Settings_bak.php

burlington

Looking at the files on the server, both the setting.php and the settings.bak.php files were changed yesterday. Not by me! Could have been hacked? I wonder if there is any other explanation.

I then replaced the 2 files with the original files from my local disk and altered the settings and uploaded the files. At the moment I am getting 'can't connect to the database'.

I will check the settings again but I wonder what is going on.

Could I reinstall without losing all the messages?

Martin

No need to reinstall. Download Repair Settings tool

Make sure Settings and Settings.bak are writeable, Enter your correct database info, once you get the forum back online, change the permissions on the settings file so they are not writeable. then delete repair settings tool file.

Very helpful. Thank you.

Still does not work though, and i am getting database failure messages.

I have asked the ISP if there is a problem with their server.

Thanks again.

if you can't connect to the database, then the username/password could be incorrect. Do you have cpanel or something similar where you can confirm the information?

I'm Back!!!!

What happened and why is a mystery to me.

Many, many thanks for all your help folks.

As recommended the settings and settings.bak file now have no write permissions. they weren't before the problem.

Martin
