Mods installed:
Using default theme: yes
Error log: none

I have three news items. When I click to save another item the page reloads
and the new item is not there.
(((Yes I know default is set to 5 in SSI.php)))
I did change templates several days ago, and then modified some, and replaced
some of the theme images.
Been running 1.1.2 since February with Amber theme.
Tried going back to Amber, and seeing if news fader was working properly there...no.
So now I did a complete upgrade to 1.1.4  The problem still persists.
I checked my error log at my server ......
" host: command not found
sh: line 1: host: command not found
sh: line 1: host: command not found
sh: line 1: host: command not found
sh: line 1: host: command not found
[Fri Dec 14 08:58:26 2007] [error] [client 71.203.20.68] user (Edited) not found: /_h_admin_/errorlog.pl
[Fri Dec 14 08:59:06 2007] [error] [client 71.203.20.68] user (edited) not found: /_h_admin_/errorlog.pl
[Fri Dec 14 08:59:17 2007] [error] [client 71.203.20.68] user (edited): authentication failure for "/_h_admin_/errorlog.pl": password mismatch

Now here I am afraid to change the password in my server settings,
database password for a several reasons..
one- I can't imagine how the password would have gotten changed in my admin panel settings in smf
two- the number of asterisks there do not match any password I use anywhere--so although it looks to almost certainly be the wrong password by my reckoning..if I change I will not know what to change it back to if I've made a mistake.
three.... if that password for database in smf is wrong..wouldn't it effect other things that I do in smf????????? nothing else is effected.

Advice would be much appreciated...

those commands seem to be related to server problems and not with SMF

is anything showing up in SMF's error log?

No sir.. nothing in smf logs
No mods...I have just this last week switched to the Usebb template..which is one of the templates
I originally put in thge forum back in February. Switching back to old template is no help.
What I have done is.....
I've poked around every file there is figuring out how to change text colors..and I've changed template images out.
My first guess what went wrong was that as I was looking through all the files trying to learn how it
all fits together and works, and changing colors allover the place figuring out what effected what, that
I must have touched a tiny piece of code that effects that submit button for news..maybe inadvertantly hit a key and put a letter in somewhere without knowing I did it and then saving it....but after that I upgraded to 1.1.4 from 1.1.2 and replaced every file I have...
before that I replaced many from old backups.
IF...for some strange reason my server password in smf got changed to something wrong..and I don't see how that could have happened BUT if that did happen...AND the number of asterisk showing in that server pass text area is more letters than i ahve for any password and not the one I "think" it's supposed to be... is there any possibility that could be causing this problem even though the rest of the forum is just as wonderfully stable as ever?
I'm patient..I just know somebody is gonna come across this at some point and know exactly what I did wrong.
Thank you

well, you could do a test to see if it was your modification simply by making a backup of your current files, then restoring all default files of the version you're using (don't upload install.php or Settings.php) and see if that fixes it.

You should ask your host if theres anything in the apache/webserver error log (if you haven't checked already that is.

#4
 Thanks
Ok here's where i am now :)

I've finally learned my way around the database a little..
Every time I type into a new text box for news and "SAVE"
I am not getting a new item and the text I saved is not what is going up into my database.
No matter what I type the database receives this text  a:0:{}  instead.
I hope that narrows the problem down :)

PS.. I wonder-- is there a variable I can change for the number of news items right in my database?
I could add items there, and text.. then just edit news like normal.

PSS.. can someone tell me what sections in the DB relate to news?
IE: topics,themes,polls,sessions,boards,messages,log actions ?

Ok .. I found a work around that worked just perfect,&
will post it for anyone else ever searching this forum for the same problem.
Hopefully someone can add a better solution to this thread later.

Went into MySQL database on my hosting server
Settings > browse 'values' > edit 'news' >add several lines of text to
'value'-'text' and save.
In admin news panel several new item boxes will appear dependent on amount of text added.
Looks to be one new items per line of text..
edit the news for each item. Delete extra items or repeat some of the news items as
placeholders for those items to avoid going back into MySQL later.
Don't forget default maximum number of items is 5. I forget where to change that--I changed mine to 22 in
Settings.php

Thanks again for the help...I'll be checking back in hopes of an honest fix.

metallica48423

without the information above, theres no way we can even know what's wrong to try to find a fix.

This feature works fine on many many SMF installs so we just need to find out why yours doesn't want to work properly with your server :)

Apologies BlackMage
I talked to tech support, and the guy says he found no errors.
I also checked the error logs that i have access to, and no errors there either.
I feel pretty sure I'm responsible for this...i DID poke around in every file there is.
Right now I'm thinking that when I reinstalled and replaced every file, that I thought I went near,
that I replaced the files of the theme I set as default just days before, and not the files in the actual default filter.
I'll give that a go first chance I get. I think that's gonna do the job too.
Buncha time wasted for being thick headed....well, no...
I actually got to get familiarized with an awful lot of things I knew nothing about a week ago, so this has
been a really fruitful learning experience.
So thanks , very much, and last question...
when you go and change a new theme to default...it is the files in the default file that are in use..
not the files in that themes folder as I'd assumed. . . . . .right? :)

metallica48423

no, the files being used would be the ones in that theme's folder.  the default theme holds SMF's default theme "core"
