The httpd logs are filling up with millions of entries that I suspect might be related to .htaccess, but I'm not sure.

Here's an example of what I'm seeing:

[Sun Dec 30 10:58:39 2007] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] File does not exist: /home/smf/public_html/404.shtml, referer: http://www.nameofdomain.com/index.php?action=unread
[Sun Dec 30 10:58:39 2007] [error] [client xx.xx.xx.xx] File does not exist: /home/smf/public_html/Themes/helios_multi11final_tp/images/icons/normal_post_sticky.gif, referer: http://www.nameofdomain.com/index.php?action=unread

The site runs an SMF message board and nothing else.

I renamed the .htaccess file to .htaccess.test to see if that was the issue, but it it still logged the errors.

Anyone have any ideas?

Something like that

Something is linking to files that don't exist.

Is there an image present at
  /home/smf/public_html/Themes/helios_multi11final_tp/images/icons/normal_post_sticky.gif

If not, its trying to find your 404 page, but one doesnt exist.

There are literally millions of entries in the log file, and they seem to be referencing gif files (like upshrink2.gif), and it's looking for them in the public_html directory, not in the smiley directory or avatar directory, etc.

What's odd is that the images are in the correct directory if you drill down.

This is really weird...

are you using any .htaccess or maybe seo style mods?

Sorry to leave you hanging.  My site is currently down due to a failed HD.

I'll get back to this thread once the site is actually up.
