Would be cool for search engine spiders to be listed in the users online list when they are on your forum.
This space for rent.

So much for people with arachnophobia

You can maybe call it something else than Spiders, how about Bots.
Seems a lot more neutral, and that's what they are. Bots crawling your site. Then it wouldn't be dangerous for the arachnophobia folks.
Not that I'm noe comfortable with the name spiders, but Bots are a lot more neutral in translation as well.

Nemesis

seems like a pain in the butt. too many spiders are out there and they all seem to use random ip's and techniques.

Yeah, they have dynamic. But maybe not show it to the public at Who's Online, but put it in the Access Log in the admin panel. More relevante, as it is only for the admin to know how many bots who have crawled the board. But this is definatley a mod.

Invision (sp?) shows spiders online, and even has them named...
Just do it, go Charter! [Unknown] offered me a spot on the dev team! I swear it!

The question is would any members give a flying pig which bots were in or not ?
Useful for admins but a waste of space for any regular members.
It should belong in the admin section but not who's online.

Saying that though, I would like to see which spiders enter and where they go on the forum :)

Spaceman-Spiff

there are so many bots and crawler names out there to keep track...
maybe it will be a nice mod....

Jack.R.Abbit™

I'm with Fizzy... being able to track spiders' movements as an admin would be alright... but from a user point... who gives a crap?

Shadow

I'd like to see if google is browsing the board...

would be great to be seen by admins, and, as an option, by all users if they want to...

ok then, why not just include the user agent in log_errors
so we can see if its a bot or not

Happy Axeman

tracking and logging which spiders and where they have visited would be a cool feature... but I suppose your running into web site traffic anaylisis, which defeats the object of being a forum...  lol
but I like the idea of showing how many spiders are on line for admins only.

it's not too hard to identify such a spider because they have such "cool" user agent names like Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)

sorry to bump an old  thread like this, but i just got reminded of this again by an IPB... any new thoughts an making this a mod, or even better, a feature? ::)

ryanbsoftware

IPB dispalys bots in the who's online list, well some big ones anyway like googlebot. ;)
