Fresh install, Upgrade to 1.4 all appears ok but, When i log in in fact if anyone logs in another box opens and says password incorrect !! But when i type in the same password it gives me access.

Found some information after doing a search but couldn't find a post to resolve my problem.
I have installed Tinyportal too hoping this would give me a choice to log in a different way and turn off the usual log in but that didn't work.

Any assistance appreciated.

Go to Admin->Server Settings->Feature Configuration and see if you have the following options set:

Enable local storage of cookies -> Unchecked
Use subdomain independent cookies -> Checked
Use database driven sessions -> Checked

Then delete your cookies to see if it helps.

Hello m8, Scheesh ! you put some time and work here dude, you been solving problems for some time, Nice 1.

I noticed this when i searched for the password problem and tried it but ! no joy.

Thanks for your time m8.

greyknight17

No problem...let's get to the bottom of this issue also :)

So clearing the cookies didn't help either? I assume it's happening even if you use another browser right?

Try switching these around:

Enable local storage of cookies -> Checked
Use subdomain independent cookies -> Unhecked

Otherwise, go to Admin->Server Settings and see if the cookie name is SMFCookie11. If not, change it to that to see if it helps.

ubastorm

No didn't work either, I logged out used windows washer to clean my internet cookies and logged in to the sign in section, immediately another box opened informing me my password was wrong and I entered the same password and it let me in.. I also changed the cookie to SMFCookie11 as my other one was SMFCookie463.

Just a question !! is the password stored on a file, if it was changed would it sort of check and give access !? sorry if it sounds silly but I'm new to forums and coding lol.

If you would like access to my site just to see or i can post a screen shot if it would help ...

The password is stored in the database. The actual password any member used will not be viewable. It's encrypted/hashed and can't be decrypted as far as I know. The problem is not with the password though since it's happening to all your users.

I guess this is worth a try. Go into Admin->Forum Maintenance and run the following:

Optimize all tables to improve performance.
Find and repair any errors.
Recount all forum totals and statistics.

I'm glad I found this thread.  One of my members is having the exact same issue on my forum. Strange...
She's using dial-up and Netscape...not sure if that has anything to do with it though.

I'm gonna lurk around this thread a bit, hopefully somebody can figure it out.  :)

I have members that have the same issue.. on my site, it only happens to members that use Opera or FireFox.

I use IE 6 and it doesnt happen to me.

Hope that helps.

I have just upgraded to 1.1.4 and have had pages of Password Incorrect errors from my members. I have made the changes greyknight has said and have deleted my error logs so I will watch now and see if the changes fix the problem. I will get back to you all.

ubastorm

hmmm ! still no good lol ... Done what you instructed but still no good m8. I have included a screenshot just to show eg.

I tried a complete fresh forum and as soon as it was patched to 1.4 it caused the same fault !

greyknight17

Is this a new database created or a backup?

Why did you patch it up? Can you install SMF 1.1.4 (full install) instead and see if the same problem occurs?

I know your asking the other person, but, Mine is a backup that we had to restore.. Its been over 2 months ago so I really cant remember if this happened on my forum before then or not. Could this be where the issue is coming from?

Please tell me all I need to do is replace a template file with a new one from a fresh install..lol.

greyknight17

Kimmie, did you also try setting up the cookie permissions mentioned earlier to see if it helps?

yeah I tried that some time ago, and it didnt change anything. :(. (sorry I didnt think to mention that in my earlier post). What I may do in the next few days is do a fresh install on a test site (with no mods or anything) and have my other admin try it there and see what happens. Atleast that way, I can narrow it down to 4 things:

1. The theme I am using (or TP itself)
2. Its something to do with the backup
3. its one of the mods I have installed.
4. It may just be a browser thing after all. (I use ie 6 and have never had it happen to me)

Up until about 4 days ago it would only happen to my other admin and maybe 1 or two others. According to my other admin, it only happens to him when he uses opera (works fine with IE7). Now, I am getting 2-3 pages of errors from probably 10-15 members - mostly new members from those 4-5 days. I have a topic started wanting the ones its happening to - to give me some feedback (browser, etc). Hopefully we can get this thing licked..lol.

No M8 it isn't a back up, but when i installed it from Fantastico it used 1.3 then i was informed via a message that it was out of date and to click a link to upgrade, which i did.

greyknight17

Since you don't have much mods installed, try this.

Go to the Downloads section and get the SMF 1.1.4 full install file. Upload the zip file to your webhost. Then login to the webhost control panel and unzip/extract that file. Delete the install.php file. Use repair_settings.php and make sure that the database information is correct. Then click on the Recommended values. Save the changes. That should restore your forum back to working order. Delete the repair_settings.php file once you are done.

Now try logging in again and see if you have problems.

Kimmie

since this topic hasnt been marked as solved yet, and I have already posted in here on this same issue, I will post here again.

I have about 75 members a day (every day) who are having to enter their passwords more than once every time in order to log in. Same error as everyone else is getting "password incorrect", blah blah blah. I have already tried changing the settings "Enable local storage of cookies" etc, I have ran forum maintenance, and I am using a retored backup that I had to install several months ago. It just keeps getting worse. Its actually caused several members to stop coming to the site.

At first I thought it was just happening on members that use FF, but it appears to be random browsers now. I would REALLY love to know what to do to fix this as it is not only annoying as all get out to have to daily clean out all those entries from my error log, but its costing me members.

greyknight17

When did you start noticing this issue?

Not sure what else you have tried already, but try to truncate the online users table to see if it helps. This will kick everyone off, so use it wisely...preferably when there is little to no members online. Worse thing is that they need to login again ;)

Go into phpMyAdmin and click on your database. Then click on the SQL tab and copy paste the following code and run it:

TRUNCATE smf_sessions;
TRUNCATE smf_log_online;

thanks for the help. This issue has been going on for as long as I can remember (prety much the entire time I have had the forum which has been about 8 months now). I will try this at a time when its the most convenient (there arent many members online), and let you know how it goes.
