Broken Arrow

Hi everyone. I just installed SMF and I think I am in love! I had been using phpbb for nearly 3 years and while updating my forum recently I lost over 14,000 articles posted and 116 members due to issues with the software. Not a good thing! So I went looking for new software and chose SMF and I  am glad I did! The features are going to make my members very happy

I do have a couple of questions that I have not found the answers to yet. They may be on here somewhere but I just have not found them.

First, how do I get my own smileys to work? I uploaded a file called mysmileys to the Smiley folder of course and typed in the path to it in the admin panel...but they will not show up.

I do like the smileys used here on this forum. Where might I find those and what are they called? I would be happy with those.  :D

another question I have is will there be a modification or is there one now that will allow youtube videos to be embedded within posts? I had that on my old forum and really want to be able to keep doing that.

Oh one more: can html be used to place a banner as a signature? Or php code?

These things may have already been addressed here so please forgive me if this is not the proper place to ask.

I really like the support here. I have read over quite a bit of the threads and unlike phpbb where I would wait forever for help, there seems to be a wonderful group here. Thank you for that. It means the world to newbies like me to know we can get help if we need it.

I should add that I am using version 1.1.4

These smilies (the SMF sites) aren't available for the public to use.
To have your own smilies you need to have them inside the "Smileys" folder inside your forum, you can place them in the default or their own folder, and then go into the smilies section of admin and add the set (as the post above shows). You can also download smilies from the site which will install for you :)

For youtube I would recommend Karls mod, he's always updating.

Yeah, you can use banners in the sigs, but you need to use BBC Admins can use the html tag and use <img> etc with it.

Hope you continue to enjoy SMF :D

thank you Sherpa and Alundra.

I just installed the you tube thingy on the first link given me by  Sherpa. Boy that was easy and it works perfectly!

The smileys I tried to use ( my own smileys) are not showing up. I get the little red x in a box. But I will figure it out. I did not notice before that I had a section for adding my smileys to the site. I merely saw the part asking for the path.

I really do like this software. It is very simple to use.

;)

thanks again!

you welcome

what i did with my smileys problem is

I uploaded all my smileys in /smf/smileys/default
I went to admin panel>>Smileys and Message Icons>>smileys set>> clicked on modify default >> I show There are 45 smileys in the directory that have no yet been imported. Click here to import them now

I just clicked on that Click here link and finally every smileys start to come out fine.

then went to edit smileys >> checked on all smileys I dont need any more the point removed from the drop box.

then went to set smileys order and placed the smileys position as I wanted

at last notice when i am writing massage cry the stupid smileys coming out insist of letter cry so I went to Edit smileys again and the name of each smileys  and that took me long time
so i suggest you to edit the name of your smileys befor you upload to smf/smileys/default

trust me you will save lots off time

Your smileys path NEEDS to go to the right place, or run repair_settings.php from the downloads section
http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?tools
And place the right path in the box :)
Don't forget to delete this file after you have used it.

if you right click and view the image location (i forget what it is in IE), what path does it come up with?  Is that path where the smiley actually is? (it doesn't sound like it is) -- if not, thats where SMF is expecting it to be

Which is why using the repair_settings.php can help you. It will reset the path so that SMF expects it to be where you want it to be :D.

Oh such wonderful advice! Thank you, each of you. And hi Metallica, nice to meet you

I will work on the smileys later today and will keep all of your instructions so I know what to do.

I worked till the wee hours of the morning building the site and I have to say I felt like a kid with a brand new toy. This is such a wonderful software. It is so easy to use. I am really thrilled I no longer have to go into each page of codes  and edit them to add mods. I have taught myself all of this by trial and error.  phpbb really sucked  :o

I love simple machines!

thanks again and I will be back if I run into any problems. Or maybe just to hang out and learn if you don't mind

Yall have a nice day!

metallica48423

we certainly don't mind :)

I'll go ahead and mark this solved.  If you need assistance again, feel free to start a new topic :)

Can I tack on to this thread?

I am trying to add smilies and I don't see the options stated above about adding.

When I click on modify, the only option there is to rename the smiley set and to check whether it is the default set. I click save and it goes back to the set list.

If I try to make a new smiley set, I only have options of the sets that are currently there (as name options).

Can someone help?

krstofer

Nevermind. I didn't realize customized smileys needed to be checked.

You also have to replace the smileys that are there already, krstofer . I replaced the default smileys

When you go into the admin panel and choose the smiley thing, the page that comes up has a bar of buttons over it and on there click on Edit Smileys. The check off the ones you want to get rid of. Look at the very bottom of the page and you will see a drop down menu with choices to pick for all the smileys you checked off. Choose remove to get rid of the old smileys

and then look at that bar of buttons again and choose ADD SMILEY and then you can add them one at a time uploading them from your computer

That's how I did it

krstofer

Thanks! I got it all working now. :-)
