I have recently upgraded to SMF and since doing so several of my users tell me that they have to login every time they access the forums, even through they have checked the box that says to stay logged in forever.

I have also experienced this too, especially on my laptop.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance  ;)

Have you tried clearing your cookies from your site, then logging in?

Upgraded to SMF from another forum or from an older version of SMF? If older version, how did you do the upgrade (via Package Manager or manually)?

Give this a try:

Go to Admin->Server Settings->Feature Configuration and see if you have the following options set:

Enable local storage of cookies -> Unchecked
Use subdomain independent cookies -> Checked
Use database driven sessions -> Checked

My site is located at hxxp:forums.northeastbass.com [nonactive]

This was an upgrade from YaBB SE. I was running version 1.51 and then upgraded it to 1.55. Then it was converted to SMF 1.14.

Everything else is fine. The board runs great and I really like the new security features, when it comes to being able to keep SPAMMERS out based on their host or their email domain (*@*.cn), etc.

Since it is happening to numbers of people, I know that it isn't just a cookie issue on my PC.

I will check the system settings for the forums and see what I find.

Thanks for your responses.

OK.. now this is not good at all.

I changed the server settings as mentioned, checking the two boxes that were suggested and making sure that the first box mentioned was unchecked.

Now I can't login to my forums at all with Firefox. I even tried a user account that I use for testing. Neither of them can login. I tried clearing my cookies.

I get this message:  You were unable to login. Please check your cookie settings.

Then I tried IE 7 and was able to login with no trouble.

Any ideas as to how to fix this??

Try running repair settings.php. This might help, if not, it was at least worth a try. Delete the file after use.

Well, now I went back into the Server Settings (using IE) and unchecked the boxes that I had just checked before.

Once I saved the settings I can no longer login with IE.

someone please help!!

BrainDead Fish

So now I went back and tried to login again, but changed the setting to only stay logged in for one hour, instead of forever, and it let me in.

This is odd...

So, seeing that the settings didn't work with the Local Cookies box unchecked, should I go ahead and check that box so that a cookie will be stored on the PC of the user?

Sorry for so many questions. I just want to get this resolved once and for all so I won't have to come back here and ask about it a million times  ;)

Yes cookies should be installed on the user side too, as that is how they will stay logged in if they choose, because smf will check for their cookie.

OK.. so please clarify. One person said that the box for storing a cookie on the users PC should be unchecked, but you're saying that it should be checked.

Which should it be?

After all these various changes, were you clearing your cache and cookies.  Then trying to access the forum?  I think the cookies left over might be causing the issue.  This would explain why it was affecting you and your other members, as they all would have the same kind of left over cookie issues.

Also when logged in does it redirect to say http://www.forums.northeastbass.com/ by any chance?
